I would vote for .300 Win Mag or 300 WSM followed by .338 Win Mag. They have good performance, a wide variety of bullets and factory loads but the .338 is a heavier recoil which makes it a little less desirable IMO. The short mags are great especially the .300 WSM because of great ballistics and bullet availability. I would love a .325 WSM but the bullets aren’t made by all the popular companies.

300 win. mag, Stainless synthetic. Tikka, Remington, or Ruger (you could spend more if you want, but you'll just be beating up an expensive gun). .300 win ammo can be found almost any where, hunt with 180gr or a good 150gr for flatter shooting option where range may be an issue. Elk country is rough country, so stainless sythetic is a must, lighter the rifle the better, leave the varmint scope at home, get a good 3-9 or maybe 4-14 (Leupold, Burris) a multiple aiming point recticle is a big help if you learn how to use it and practice. I have many friends who punish them selves with the new Ultra Magnums, and friends who have a hard time finding ammo for their short magnums, and both are usually more expensive to shoot unless you reload. Almost every mom and pop store in elk country has some 300 win ammo, and the 300 has consistanly dropped elk in their tracks for me.

RE: In Your Eyes The Perfect Elk Gun
the gun you are most comfortable with, and have shot a LOT of loads through....the caliber is nearly irrelevant if the shot is placed perfectly...
for me, I have both a .280 (ruger) and a 300 Win mag (Tikka)....both are more than capable, and both are very good shooters...personally prefer my .280, as I have shot it more, and know the feel of it more...but my 300 is a tack driver on the range, even out to long distance shots
but I spend plenty of time on the bench and in the field, but generally find myself grabbing for the .280...
both are scoped with great glass, which IMHO is more important for the "distance shots" However, for me the longest I have shot a bull is 150 yards, always prefer to get close and see them, versus lobbing bullets from long ways away, so I rarely shoot those "distance shots"

Bought it last year.....Weatherby Mark V Fibermark in .340 Wby.
a 2nd choice would be the .338 RUM.
IMO the .338 is the ultimate in long range elk medicine, lots of guys like the .338 win mag, but I like the added velocity of the .340 compared to the .338 win mag,
Nowadays the .300 WSM or .300 win mag, and the .300 RUM are great options.
To me the .340 wby is my #1, but if I were to consider anything else it would be a lighter setup in .300 WSM I think.
