Rather B Huntin..I know how much our fellow hunters like to pass on the tradition of their sport to very hungry rookies, so you can email me privately with the directions to your spot.
Heck, I' d even let ya hunt with me to show me a few things! AND...if you talk real sweet, help ya pack that big' ol' 6 x 6 for me!!!
What a deal eh.

Rook I live in Springfield OR, and am also from the midwest (ohio). I' ve been bowhunting elk for 3 years and each year get a little better and closer. My best teacher has been experience and time in the woods. My first year was just finding where the dumb things live, second year I started seeing them more often and this past season me and my buddy called 2 within bow range but no shots. All the advice is good, listen to these guys, but just spend some time out there. By the way, where do ya live?

Now if you tell me you are my neighbor, this is gonna be WAAAAAAAAAAAY too weird.
...small world.
We just moved to Springfield from Eugene a few months ago, and out to Oregon two years ago. We actually like it much better here in Springfield (actually Thurston), people seem to be much less uptight over here.
I' ve got a few areas where I know elk are, now it' s just a matter of doin' some scouting and learning the tricks of the trade. I' m actually planning on hunting a few hours east this year to get into some more open terrain. I have a really crappy back (fusion a month ago), and all that bending over to get under the brush kills me....man, I sounds like an old tator!
32...how old are ya?
You a Bow Rack guy? I' m actually in the process of buying a new bow from Wayne...sold my Hoyt for a lighter and shorter bow.

rookelkhunter, I don' t need to send you a private e-mail to tell you my spot I can tell you right here its in Utah. I will need help haulin out that big ole 6x6 cause next year I' ll know where his escape route is, barely missed him this year. I saw a rack that would have easily made me a high roller the that little club called the Pope & Young but didn' t have enough time for shot. I probably stood there and looked at him for 5 mintues and just forgot to shoot, I don' t really remember except seein that monster rack. See you there!

I know what you mean rather b....I remember when I first started bowhunting I was walking back to the truck (I was a little punk at the time...maybe 16 or so) and came upon this MONSTER whitetail...that thing had to have scored almost 200. It stood there out in the open at probably no more than 35-40 yards, long enough for me to count his sixteen nontypical points THREE TIMES (ya know, I had to be sure for good story purposes!), while the entire time I was thinking, " oh wait till my buddies hear about this one!" What the......was I thinkin' ?!?!?!?! Why in the world I wasn' t thinkin' , " wait ' till my buddies see this bad boy hanging on my wall" , I will never know. Haven' t seen a buck that big since!

Everyone else has pretty much said what you need to do, but I should add my two cents. Scout Scout Scout!! You might want to wait until the first snow for your hunt. The elk are more likely to come down from the high elevation mountains

I must not know what scoutin' is. How on earth you gonna scout elk down low when they ain' t down there? Are you talkin' bout findin' elk durin' the season? Scoutin' elk is useless if done when they ain' t there. Rabbit deer can be patterned in August an' shot in October if they ain' t bothered. Not so with elk. Maybeso yall can learn ol' BJ sumthin' . I say you cain' t scout elk, only elk country. Get to know the land an' its attractions to elk thet MIGHT be there come huntin' season.

BJ-I wasn' t thinking about your country with those big hills. We scout at 8000 feet and kill them in the same place in the fall. If we get a very cool fall they will drop down to 5000 feet in junipers and close to high desert. Arizona aint Wyoming. Good hunting.

Bow season starts in August and runs through mid September and the elk around here are very much still up high on the summer range. Rifle season is first week in October and most years the elk are still up high on their summer range. This year it snowed a few days before about 4 inches and they were still there opening day. If there is much snow they will move lower like ole BJ said and your scouting plan is out the door. I guess we have a little better weather down here in Utah, huh BJ?
