Usually the size of the head is what I look at. The males will be broader.
Also the genticles. By placing a choice bait high for the bear to reach you can sometimes get a good look at that area.

Good answer bush! Sows usually have a long narrow skinny looking head and snout and boars are just oppisite of that, heads look wider and the nose doesn't seem so long.

If you watch close and see a bear stand some you can see all bear have two breasts just like a female homo sapiens. If the bear dont stand a little or get at the right angle you'll have to go withthe suggestions posted
above.

Tough one....in the spring usually the ladies will have their cubs...all of the Boars I shot were alone with another boar......

Look for cubs in spring...if its a big bear and its not looking around like it has babies around...it may be a big boar...if its a big bear and the little ones are with it...its mamma

Check out their forearms. Boars usually will have the wider and braoder forearms. Also the shape of the head will tip you off also.

If you look at enough, you will soon be able to tell!!!

Well, I've never seen a bear with two breasts. That's pretty funny.
The shape of the head that's already been mentioned is a good indication.
When a bear is on all fours if the hind quarters are slightly higher than the shoulders it's a sow.
If the shoulders are higher than the hind quarters it's a boar.
Like Elkcrazy8 said if you look at enough you will be able to tell.
It takes looking at a lot of bears to know for sure.

For comparison, here is a pic of a sow that I killed. Notice that thehead shape is much different than the pics of the boars in the avatars above. Boars will have more of a pronounced forhead...

Here's a boar. Notice how the head on my bear is wider and shorter looking compared to the sow in the above picture. This bear in my picture has a 20 5/16" head. Mines much bulkier to up front then the sow in the above picture. The smaller younger bear are harder to judge on gender then bigger ones are. I'm on the right and my dads on the left. I shot this bear in 2000.
