Just wanted to pass this information down the line.
While hunting elk & deer in my home state of Wyoming, a game warden checked my license. Healso asked mewhat caliber I was shooting? My response was (.338-caliber)340-weatherby mag.He told me he has been asking hunters this question for years. He said the number one caliber of choice for elk huntersin his survey has been the338-caliber. He said the 30-06 ran a close second.
The Deer hunterscaliber of choicewas"hands down" the 25-06.
I found hissurvey interesting, I hope others do as well.

I would have thought the 300 win mag would have been a popular choice for elk hunters. I wonder if he actually records a tally or is just going by memory.

I would have thought a 270 or 06 would be tops on the list. Maybe he just talks to nonresidents

Before I went to CO back in 1993 I had corresponded on the net and talked to a few guideoutfits that told me that their minimum caliber to hunt in high country was .338 cause of the horses and the bears. For low country hunting, 7mmMag to .300Mag. I took a A-bolt .338 and a BLR .358, which I sold bothDec of 2006....
In 1994 I went unguided and hunted low and killed a Spike Elk and a Muley with Ruger .270 W/150gr NP

My two favorite calibers in the world.....338(UM)and 25/06....caliber nirvanna!!!
And no question he only talked to non-residents!!! Don't most natives shoot a 22 caliber-something as they all know that bullet placement is all that matters!!!
