Spike Bull Elk
Can someone give me an idea of the average weight a Utah Rocky Mountain Elk runs.
|
RE: Spike Bull Elk
Welcome to the forum Lrac. Bulls will run anywhere
from 700-900 pounds depending on age and forage. |
RE: Spike Bull Elk
Thanks. Aren't spikes 1 year old? Are you saying 1 year olds run that much?
|
RE: Spike Bull Elk
Yes spikes are yearlings. No spikes dont weigh near
that much. They have 5 or 6 years to go to be fully mature and achieve max antler growth. |
RE: Spike Bull Elk
Here in Idaho if you're hunting elk in Sept. or Oct. a spike bull will generally weigh 350lbs to 450lbs on the hoof. And its age is 1 1/2 yrs. And if you have to pack it out on your back over 3 miles the weight then doubles.LOL Speaking from experience its the best meat you'll ever eat.

RE: Spike Bull Elk
I shot a Spike Bull in the Gila he weighted 550 Lbs on the hoof. Good luck

RE: Spike Bull Elk
Thanks Guys. That's the exact info i've been looking for. 350-550 should yeild 140-220 lbs of meat (3-5 times as much as a deer). My hunt will be Oct 1 in Utah.

RE: Spike Bull Elk
Lrac I'm from Utah and the one you need to ask. Most spikes around here weigh about 200-250 cleaned. Thats pretty much the average.

RE: Spike Bull Elk
By the way where are you hunting?
