300 mag for Antelope?
How much damage will a 300 mag do to a antelope? I have a buddy who wants to go with me antelope hunting and wants to borrow my .243 which leaves me with my 300 mag. I would probably shoot 150 grain federal fusions or remington corelokts.

RE: 300 mag for Antelope?
It will work well but I would stay with 180 grain bullets. They will usually do less meat Damage. I would certainly prefer the 300 Mag to the 243.

RE: 300 mag for Antelope?
If ya take a broadside shot and shoot behind the shoulder, aiming to exit behind the off shoulder, you won't ruin any more meat than if you'd used your .243.

RE: 300 mag for Antelope?
I found that the 150 grainers were too destructive out of the 300. Bullets in the 180 to 200 grain class are a much better choice for a cartridge of that magnitude. I have had many a 150 grainer explode on impact.

They'll leave a nice exit hole.

RE: 300 mag for Antelope?
theres not a whole lot of meat on an antelope, if your gonna use a 300 shot through the ribs/lungs because anything in the shoulders is bound to tear up alot of meat.

RE: 300 mag for Antelope?
There's no meat on the lungs ,use whatever is most accurate in your gun.I've shot them with both 150 and 180gr handloads out of a .308 Norma Magnum and didn't notice any more damage than the .250 Sav or .270 Win.Harold

RE: 300 mag for Antelope?
I've shot my .300 for everything for years and used to switch between 150 and 180gr depending on animal size. (Elk, bear, deer, antelope)
Now I just use 180, no more damage, and it shoots the same at everything. Consistancy in using the same round every time. |
RE: 300 mag for Antelope?
I like trhe 300 better in those long cross winds shotes out there. [/align] |
RE: 300 mag for Antelope?
I also use my .300 Win. Mag for all of my big game. 180 nosler partitions, handloads or vital shok Federal Premium. I have killed a lot of antelope with it over the years but like mentioned above, don't hit the shoulders.
