I have a .270 WSM winchester model 70 and I think it'll knock down an elk I shot a whitetail this year from 75 yards and It went right down right there so no problems and that was with the Vital Shok 130 grain ballistic tip it was awesome

I bought a 270WSm in 2002 when they first came out because a friend did so well shooting Moose in Alaska with his 270WSM.
I have shot numerous elk with my 270WSM, Everything form 200 to 500 yards. It's usually Bang/Flop
I use a Barnes 140g TSX over 73.5 grains of MagPro. I shot a Spike two years ago as he faced me. Bullet entered base of neck and exited just above the tail. Almost the entire length of the elks body.
The first year I had the gun prior to working up a load. I used the factory 150g bullets and shot several Cow elk.

My buddy bought one and uses factory loads and has shot several cow elka nd a nice 374 bull this fall.

I've got a 300 WSM and several 30-06 rifles and they stay in the safe since I bought my 270WSM. No need to buy another gun just to hunt elk.
Always a good reason to buy another gun. But you don't need to unless you want to.

What factory 150gr. load and bullet you was using? I have been shooting 150gr. Winchester Power Point ammo out of my 700xcr 270wsm. It has been accurate and chronographed 3200fps. out of my gun. I haven't taken any animals with it yet. Next Sunday my doe deer tag starts. I can not wait to touch the trigger on a animal.

Painted Horse is right. You have a great elk rifle. Just go hunt elk with the rifle you have and bypass the chatter about which is better. Do practice at longer ranges. You elk hunt enough times and you will eventually be provided an opportunity with no option to close the distance below 300 or more yards. And the 270WSM can do its part with the right bullet if you can do your's.

Years back people used 30-30's to hunt elk and yes theirhas probablybeen more game taken with the 30-30 then any other gun, but like everyone has said it all depends on were you put the shoot. I have seenand heard of alot ofelk lost with 270's, they work, but I'll take my 300wmag overone of the 270's any day

No. Non-res must use at least 378 Weatherby.

Good luck.

I bought a box of 150 Winchester Power Points and a box of 130 Winchester Supreme BT when I bought the rifle. Used them to sight in and generate brass that I could reload. I still have part of each box as I quickly worked up a load with the barnes TSX bullets.

I now use those bullets to calibrate my Chrony, Since they are factory loads and I know how fast they are supposed to be. If my chrony reads something different. I know it's set up wrong or the weather is drastically affecting the speed. Once I have a base line with the factory ammo, I can shot my reloads and know the chrony is readding fast or slow for that day.

Load the 270 WSM with the 160 grain Nosler Partition and it gives up nothing to the 7 Mag.
