RE: Maine Moose Draw

I drew a tag in 2001 in zone 1 and ended up shooting a 552 lb cow at 11 am on the last day. I wanted to do it without just driving the roads and shot one off the road and I wanted to bow hunt at least to start. As it turns out the rut in our area was past so calling did not work so after 3 days I switched to the rifle. Zone 1 is very difficult because of remoteness and it is a big logging area adjacent to canada and many people we spoke to said that the loggers don't have a problem knocking a moose down when they want and dragging it across the border in a logging truck. But overall it was a great experience that I hope to be able to do again. It took me about 10 years to draw and I can't put again for another year. After being drawn you have to wait 2 years to apply again. But I have been putting my wife and father in and I can be a sub permittee on their tag. It is well worth chance to do it.

I've been applying for 6 years now, and My son has been applying for 4. We apply as subs on each others apps. Figure Our odds are a lot better that way. I think Your chances are about as good as winning the lottery, but I will apply EVERY year til I get one. I'm actually on their mailing list now, and they send Me an application automatically. I'm with 445 supermag on this one; it's been My dream for a long time to go harvest a moose. I tasted the meat about 10 years ago, and it IS the best meat going. After hunting in Maine and having Moose walk by and seeing them along the roads up there, I'm fascinated by them. My dream hunt would be to draw a tag and hunt moose with a bow or muzzleloader. Good luck to all who apply!

Wow, talk about coincidence! My application came in the mail today! They're a lot smaller than usual this year. Used to be a booklet, and now it's postcard sized.

Why not go on up to Quebec? Go 5 or 6 hrs. North of New York and you are in prime moose country! No applications and hunt cost are reasonable. Plus, the walleye fishing is great at that time of year and there are plenty of grouse to eat on.

You have to be in to win it. I've been appying for five years now and don't expect to draw anytime soon. Although I do know a guy who drew on his third try so you really don't know.
