Maine Moose Draw
Anybody put in? I have been putting in for 5-6 years straight

RE: Maine Moose Draw
Hey Stickerpt, I put up $78:00 for application fees but was rejected here in Montana, however I did get my money back since I didn't get drawn, I encountered some nice bulls dureing hunting season, and even had two diferent bulls here in my yard, but I could never locate anyone who had a permit to turn them onto, figures, Bobby

RE: Maine Moose Draw
I was drawn in 2001 after 16 years of applying as a resident. Killed a 50+ inch bull that dressed at 920.
My sister-in-law was drawn this year, her first time applying with only 1 chance in so I guess you never know. |
RE: Maine Moose Draw
Just a returened cashed check, stickerpt. None of my residents friends were drawn either. Maine F&G are proposing changes to next years lottery,,Looks like it will be harder us flatlanders to draw a tag.
I'll keep on trying......<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: Maine Moose Draw
How do I go about applying for a maine moose tag? I would like to get on board with this and maybe in a couple years I could get to go.
Thanks Brian |
RE: Maine Moose Draw
Well congrats to Portage. I have been up there for the hunt but
just hunted partridge. Did not seem like the hunters wanted to get too far from the road. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> 445 supermag. I dont need anymore competition. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> seriously go here http://www.informe.org/ifw/moosepermit.html you can put me down as a subpermittee if you want ![]() |
RE: Maine Moose Draw
445...Put my name down!!!! I even have a camp we can stay at...Sorry sticker<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>... Its a tough draw Brian. But well worth it if your drawn. |
RE: Maine Moose Draw
Thanks guys. Sorry stickerpt but its a dream of mine to harvest a moose. Might be silly as there are more prestigious animals but I just would love to have a moose on my wall. But thanks for the info that helps.
Jersey Joe are you serious as I would love to hook up with ya as I have never been up there for a hunt. Maybe we will get drawn at the same time and could go together. That would be cool. But I would have to warn you I would want to use my 445 supermag Dan Wesson to harvest it with. Hope that wouldn't both you too much. Brian |
RE: Maine Moose Draw
You ever taste moose meat 445? I am serious!
When the apps come out we'll talk about it. My buddy has a camp near Chamberlain Lake, Maine that we can use as long as we share some meat. It is a difficult draw 445. If you get a tag, its a hunt you'll never forget. I was co shooter on a hunt in 99 for this moose. ![]() Edited by - JerseyJoe on 01/07/2003 09:31:59 |
RE: Maine Moose Draw
sticker: I had a great hunt this fall, didn't get a moose but still a wonderful time. A guy in our group did score on a 43 incher. I seen a few bulls, but something always seemed to spoil the moment. Good luck on your Maine draw. I'll be thinking of ya next fall when I'm Moose hunting in Ontario again!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Maine Moose Draw
JJ, Never had it but I have heard that its the best bar none. Well I guess its a waiting game now. Well maybe some goodluck will be on my side.
Brian |
RE: Maine Moose Draw
Moose meat is the best bar none. Nub if you are going to be
thinking about me while you are in your moose hunt in Ontario, I sure hope you will think about me if you get a moose. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> JJ I gave 445 the info. If he draws I should be his subpermitee. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: Maine Moose Draw
You beat me by 15 minutes stickerpt....<img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle> You win. I'll tag along to help load the moose on the trailer...<img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>
|
RE: Maine Moose Draw
If me or Shaky draw, you will be more than welcome to tag
along to help load it Joe. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> You got one on those snowmobile trailers? That seems the tool of choice to haul them out with. |
RE: Maine Moose Draw
We'll stop on the way and pick up my buddies..We'll also need a come-along, 200-300ft of 3/4" rope.

RE: Maine Moose Draw
I have done some research on the maine moose hunt and this is what I found. This info come from the maine huntung wesite and a call I made to their office.
Last year 92,000 people apllied for 2500 to 3000 permits. This year the number is 2585. 70,000 were residents and 22,000 were non residents. 90%(2700)of tags goes to residents, while 10%(300)go to nonresident(even though non residents comprise 24% of applicants). Each applicant can buy up to 6($20) for residents,10($50) for non residents - chances to draw a permit. A bonus point or extra chance is give for each successive, non successful year that the applicant has applied. There is no preference point system, just chances. If each applicant only bought 1 chance, I figure the odds this way. A resident has a 4% chance drawing and a non resident has a 1.5% chance at getting a permit. Call them like you see them, Lee |
RE: Maine Moose Draw
Welcome to the board River. Your information was instructive but
not encouraging. I'm gonna keep trying tho. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> |

RE: Maine Moose Draw
I drew a tag in 2001 in zone 1 and ended up shooting a 552 lb cow at 11 am on the last day. I wanted to do it without just driving the roads and shot one off the road and I wanted to bow hunt at least to start. As it turns out the rut in our area was past so calling did not work so after 3 days I switched to the rifle. Zone 1 is very difficult because of remoteness and it is a big logging area adjacent to canada and many people we spoke to said that the loggers don't have a problem knocking a moose down when they want and dragging it across the border in a logging truck. But overall it was a great experience that I hope to be able to do again. It took me about 10 years to draw and I can't put again for another year. After being drawn you have to wait 2 years to apply again. But I have been putting my wife and father in and I can be a sub permittee on their tag. It is well worth chance to do it.

RE: Maine Moose Draw
I've been applying for 6 years now, and My son has been applying for 4. We apply as subs on each others apps. Figure Our odds are a lot better that way. I think Your chances are about as good as winning the lottery, but I will apply EVERY year til I get one. I'm actually on their mailing list now, and they send Me an application automatically. I'm with 445 supermag on this one; it's been My dream for a long time to go harvest a moose. I tasted the meat about 10 years ago, and it IS the best meat going. After hunting in Maine and having Moose walk by and seeing them along the roads up there, I'm fascinated by them. My dream hunt would be to draw a tag and hunt moose with a bow or muzzleloader. Good luck to all who apply!
|
RE: Maine Moose Draw
Wow, talk about coincidence! My application came in the mail today! They're a lot smaller than usual this year. Used to be a booklet, and now it's postcard sized.
|
RE: Maine Moose Draw
Why not go on up to Quebec? Go 5 or 6 hrs. North of New York and you are in prime moose country! No applications and hunt cost are reasonable. Plus, the walleye fishing is great at that time of year and there are plenty of grouse to eat on.
|
RE: Maine Moose Draw
You have to be in to win it. I've been appying for five years now and don't expect to draw anytime soon. Although I do know a guy who drew on his third try so you really don't know.
