7mm is a great elk caliber.. shot placememt like in anything is the first priority.
my favorites for elk from smallest caliber up.... 270, 7mm, 300 win, 300 weatherby..

What kills the elk is not the gun but the bullet (no I am not a lawyer!) So the first think to work on is bullet placement. The second most important thing is bullet quality.
Then you need to choose ammos that will deliver the bullet to the target with enough energy to properly expand inside the elk and do a quick kill.
In short a 7mm rem mag will do the job as well as many other calibers.

elk cartridges are like opinions here is my set up.
remington 700 bdl heavy barrell 7mm ultra mag.
this is the fastest of the mid magnum 175 swift a frame the last bull and bear didnt travel five feet total you hit them right they drop.
