Default Is 7mm mag enough for moose.

My Dad is trying to set up a moose hunt and want's to use his Rem 740030.06 which he hasn't killed anything with and doesn't work all that well in the past, his other choice is 7mm and 270. I think he needs to move up.

I have used 3006, 7mm rem and 270win for elk & moose. Loaded with premium bullets such as Barnes TSX, Nosler Partitions or AB, TBBC, Aframe, etc they'll work just fine on swamp donkey. Of the 3 listed I prefer the 7mm rem mag.

If dad is thinking a new rifle is requiredsuggest he jumps to the 338wm and load it with 225 or 250 gr pills. Not required but certainly one you can't go wrong with either.

30-06 is more than enough for moose, even if you're buying a new rifle because your current one is unreliable I would still get a 30-06. But if you insist on moving up, I'd rather have 7mm.

crimedog-

Skeeter is right. Any of these cartridges with the proper bullet will knock down a moose with a well placed shot. On our trip, one well placed shot with a .35 Whelen and a 225grain ballistic tipbullet did the trick at 175 yds. Most folks advocate .300's, .338's and .340's. The big guns may do a better job on tough angles for penetration, however, the '06, 7MM Mag and .270 will do their job if the proper bullet is chosen and of course, wait for the best shot available, i.e., broadside or slightly quartering away.
If the '06 isn't working that well, go for the 7MM. I would take that one over the '06 anyway. JMHO.
Good luck

It will do it just fine, but so should 30.06..

My choice is 338wm but that's just preference.

Use a bonded bullet or something like a Partition.

The noble moose is usually killed with far less potent rounds than the 7mm. A 30/06 with 180 grain bullet is probably perfect.
With moose just put one into the lungs and if you don't spook them too bad they usually hang their head a bit and may lay down quick.
Use a good bullet, the .303 British has probably killed more moose than any other round.
Good Luck

Good point about the .303Brit. And another overlooked game killer is the 300Savage.This cal isSO good there almost was no 7.62x51 mil calibre(.308 Win). The mil is still considering a 300Savlike ctg for their use to replace the soreley underpowered .223.
