Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
Ted Nugent had Jim Zumbo posting on his forum today.
"The last few days have been an educational experience, to say the least. My ill-conceived inflammatory blog, as all of you now know, set off a firestorm that, I’m told, has never before been equaled. I’m not proud of that. Let me say this at the outset. My words here are from the heart, and all mine. No one can censor me, and I answer to no one but myself. And I have no one to blame but myself. Outdoor Life, a magazine that I worked for full-time as Hunting Editor for almost 30 years, fired me yesterday. My TV show was cancelled yesterday. Many of my sponsors have issued statements on their website to sever all relationships. This may cause many of you to do backflips and dance in the streets, but, of course, I’m not laughing, nor am I looking for sympathy. I don’t want a pity party. They say hindsight is golden. Looking back, I can’t believe I said the words “ban” and “terrorist” in the context that I did. I don’t know what I was thinking when I wrote that. I can explain this as sheer ignorance and an irresponsible use of words. What I’ve learned over the last few days has enlightened and amazed me. As a guy who hunts 200 days a year, does seminars on hunting, wrote for six hunting magazines, had a hunting TV show, and wrote 20 books on hunting, how could I have been so ignorant and out of touch with reality in the world of hunting and shooting? But I was. I really can’t explain it, maybe because I just summarily dismissed the firearms in question in my mind when I saw them in magazines and catalogs. I saw one “black” firearm in a hunting camp in all my 50 years of hunting, and I shot one last year off a boat when fishing in Alaska. To tell the truth, it was fun and I enjoyed it immensely, but I never considered one for use in hunting. I have to tell you that I have had a revelation. I’m learning that many of my pals own AR-15’s and similar firearms and indeed use them for hunting. I was totally unaware that they were being used for legitimate hunting purposes. That is the absolute truth. My biggest regret is not the financial impact of all this. I’m almost 67 and retirement is an option. The dreadful impact here is that I inadvertently struck a spear into the hearts of the people I love most…America’s gun owners. And, even though this huge cadre of dedicated people have succeeded in stripping me of my career, I hold no grudges. I will continue to stand as firm on pro hunting as I’ve ever done. But what’s different now is that I’ll do all I can to educate others who are, or were, as ignorant as I was about “black” rifles and the controversy that surrounds them. My promise to you is that I’ll learn all I can about these firearms, and by the time this week is out, I’ll order one. The NUGE has invited me to hunt with him using AR-15’s, and I’m eager to go, and learn. I’ll do all I can to spread the word. I understand that many of you will not accept this apology, believing that the damage has been done and there’s no way to repair it. You have that right. But let me say this. I mentioned this above, and I’ll repeat it. I’m willing to seize this opportunity to educate hunters and shooters who shared my ignorance. If you’re willing to allow me to do that, we can indeed, in my mind, form a stronger bond within our ranks. Maybe in a roundabout way we can bring something good out of this." Jim Zumbo |
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
Sounds like Jimbo is already probing for a comeback. At 67 years old he should just fade into the sunset and let it go.
Good Hunting, Bowflex |
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
I wish the Nuge and Zumbo would invite me along on a hunting trip.

RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
Sorry guys but I've been working my butt off lately and haven't had time to keep up on the hunting world news. Would someone be nice enough to post a link to what happened originally.
THanks |

So should we welcome someone that we had considered one of our own back into the fold and be forgiving or bear a grudge? Rev may back me up on this...he without sin cast the first stone...I have done wrong and have been forgiven in my past...and may do something dumb down the road.He admitted a BIG mistake and now is willing to educate himself about his faux pas.The sport has policed it's own and has caused judgement to be passed on to the person that errored, now time will tell what Jim Zumbo and ourselves are made of.Sorry for the rant just thought I'd say what my heart has in it.

RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
I honestly feel kinda sorry for the guy. He was just shunned by the shooting sports community, and unlike normal jobs, he really doesn't have anywhere else to turn for another job unless he changes his career. I hold no grudges, but I still maintain that what he said was way out of line, especially given the timing (HR 1022 was just introduced). I think that all of the major companies have done good enough damage control by severing all ties with Zumbo to ensure that the anti-gun crowd will not mistake his opinion as being representative of the hunting community.
Forgive and forget. Jim Zumbo has already paid greatly for his momentary stupidity. Justice has been served. |
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
I have a cousin who guided Mr. Zumbo on an elk hunt, and my cousinhad nothing good to say about Mr. Zumbo. Let the chips fall where they may. Good luck.

RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
Well said, Wyotimberghost, I certainly have done my share of stupid things along the way but have tried to learn from the mistakes I've made. Certainly can't judge him as I've been down that road...

Jim Carmichael 'DEMANDED' that the guy GIVE him his long range rifle as a gift. He told Carmichael to go to h.ell. Jack O'Connor MUST be rolling over in his grave at all this Zumbone mess. Sad, very sad here... :( :( :( |

Whats the link for the Ted forum and the apology??? Thanks.

RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
A previous post stated that " we all have made mistakes somewhere, somehow, etc." I'm sure that at the time, those who've made a terrible mistake only wished to be forgiven or to rescind a statement gone awry.
The christian in us requires forgiveness. Are any of us in the hunting/shooting community sinless? Looking back, I'm sure anyone of us can recall a rediculous comment or deed done. How we choose to learn and grow from our mistakes is paramount in moving forward. Hopefully, Mr. Zumbo has seen the light here and won't ever again place himself orthe shooting-hunting community in such a blemished position again. I will forgive him, although not forget this black eye given to us by his oratory reponse. I feel that he has a long road ahead making this up to us; a very special group of people that provide him with employment, sponsors andappearances at shows for a fee. He made his living because of shooters, hunters, outdoor readers, and everyday folks like us. He needs to remember where his bread is buttered. Never, never bite the hand that feeds you! Mr. Zumbo, I offer you my acceptance of your apology, however, its time you used your reputation as a means to build our sport beyond the reach of the anti's. And don't ever smear our goodsport again! Sincerely, Stew |
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
Here is a copy of a letter I sent to Outdoor life magazine:
Bring Back Zumbo! I am sure your mailbag on Mr. Zumbo will be full this month! I have read both his original comments and his apologies including his statement that he plans on buying an AK type rifle to shoot and will try to educate people about these types of rifles in the future. As far as my position, I will fight til my dying breath to defend the right of Americans to buy these types of rifles (semiautomatic) because I don't know how you could legally ban a rifle stock, and that is the only real difference in the AK type rifles and other semiautomatic hunting rifles. That said, what would be my gut feeling if I met a fellow hunter in the field carrying one of these types of rifles? I would probably wonder if this guy had watched too many Rambo movies and would not really want to hunt in the same area as him. That is probably an emotional response brought on by ME watching too many Rambo movies. As stated, the only difference between that rifle and mine is the stock configuration and a bigger clip. I suspect that is the gut feeling that Mr. Zumbo was thinking about when he wrote his now infamous Blog. Would I ever buy one to use for hunting? No. Would I ever buy one if the need arose to defend my home or homeland? You bet. Bottom line is that Mr. Zumbo has done too much for hunting over the years to be tossed aside for one transgression, even a major one. I think we could turn this thing around and make it a positive experience with HIS help. Othewise, it just divides us and helps the antis. Please bring him back. If not, I will not be renewing my subscription. |

wyotimberghostand 358WinMan, very well said.
I don't see anything to be gained by people continuing to beat a man while he's down. He admitted he said and did some ignorant hurtful things. I accept that. For me, I don't hold it against the man. Defenders of all legal firearm ownership and use will for a time have a little tougher time fighting for our rights. But we're up to fighting the real enemies of firearms and that's by and large the Leftist politicians in this country at city, state and federal level. |
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
Not only has zumbo attacked the average man and his right to own and shoot a certain type of weapon, remember the USO fiasco on here a few years back.USO was trying tosue the states to take resident tags.Well zumbo was on the forefront of defending USO and its owner. He did so on tv and in his writings. USO was trying to take states rights, which is guarenteed by the constitution also. WHy? Zumbo probably got free hunts from the owner of USO and was trying to get a sponsorship.
Thats two strikes as far as I am concerned. |

If Zumbo stays in it and does the AR hunt on TV, the anti-guns will have a lot less to dance about. They will have three choices - one, he is just a nutcase, not worth quoting; two, he is a true convert and probably a stronger AR /AK ally than before; or three, the arm dealers money is a force to be reckoned with. Any of these three optionsis better than to just leave the original statements hanging out there for them to use. No, he may not undo all the damage, but he also cannot turn back the clock. Only decide what to do next. I am not the only hunter who has not used a battle gun for hunting but is now thinking about getting one after this debacle. I have read several like me in these forums. |

I wish I was trhere as well. Well, I ca say this much,After 67 years Zumbo will finally learn that you don't need to use a Corvette to shop for groceries, you use one cause the Law says itsO.K. to use one for that purpose.... |

RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
In responce to Mr. Zumbo's Apology I too have made mistakes in the past but when I made my mistakes I was not in a position to effect millions. "With great power comes great responsability" he has not shown over the years that he has the ability to wield such power. Can I except his apology yes, forgive him yes trust him not to shoot his mouth off again no way in He**. I have fought against him in the USO mess and {its true they did give himfree hunts any where he wanted} and now this. I will never buy anything or support any company that isaffiliated with him.He has lost his career because he deserved to. His actions called for it. If he wants to stand up for our rights then let him do it on his own dimejust like the rest of us. For he has proven he is not worthy of sponsership.
Mr. Zumbo I would say to you, You made this bed now you have to sleep in it, I can execpt the fact that you made a mistake but you should never be placed in a position to make"A" mistake again. You, through your past actions and current one's have shown you on the wrong side of the fight too many times. I except your apology but now itis time for you toRETIRE. H. |
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
As far as the USO stance/support, you are probably correct, but he was chosen for an Arizona hunt with one of the "extra" tags from the USO lawsuit, and he turned the tag back in without hunting. How many of us would have stood on our principals if we had gotten a letter that year saying we had drawn an elk tag for AZ??????
|
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
He only turned down that tag after the VP ofOLN told him itwould be in his best interest to do so. So dont make it out like he did it because he wanted to. Then he used it as an example to get back into everybodies good graces. Dont be fooled he has notmade nor was that a selfless act. He was trying to save his bacon again.
|
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
And you know this for a fact because ..............
The FACT remains that he drew a tag and did not use it. Anything else is speculation or 3rd hand at best. |
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
Soggy Cereal:
Sorry, I am not at liberty to elaborate. Good luck. |
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
I got it straight from Jake Hartwick who was the exec at OLN that canceled the USO program and is the one who told Zumbo, the before mentioned information and went into more detail than I care to about the effect this would have on his career if he did not distance himself from Taulman. Being from Az I've seen a number of people not use a tag that they have drawn for many differnt reasons. So why must it be that he didn't use his because he was trying to do the right thing. For all you know he could of had a bad case of the runns. What I do know is that he was told it would not look or be good if he went on that hunt. And the fact that USO outfitters are the worst guides in AZ is well known they are the standing jokeof the season between breaking game laws and the people that they hire. But this isn't about USO, its about the fact Zumbo did not give up his hunt for selfless reasons. Sorry Tex if this is the death of your Hero or Idle, but he is done and soon to be gone.....

RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
This was not a verbal statementin casual conversation thiswas in writing. Now tell me that this was not his honest opinion. Had it been a slip of the tongue between other hunters I could live with it and forgive. Mr. Zumbo had his opinion and statedthis in writing for all to see. A professional, high visibility hunter that intentionally wrote a article that was read by hunters, anti's, and those on the borderline that could go either way. This intentional, deliberate article cast a shadow on all who hunt. The cancellation of his show and the severing of ties with sponsors is a sign of how this statement impacted the industry and the sport. I'm glad they had the grapes to do what was right quickly and not stringing this deal out. Do I want Mr. Zumbo as a spokesman for semi auto, or should I say assault rifles? In no uncertain terms NO.
|
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
Many years ago Michael McIntosh of "Sporting Classics" mag. wrote an article pretty much saying the same thing Zumbo did in his blog. If Mr. Zumbo want's me to take his apologyseriously, he needs to get MacIntosh converted too, then i will know he is serious about his apology!!

Tes Nugent is reeducating the Zum. Zummy may appear onstage with Ted at the NRA convention, as well he should.
The pointof all this messis thatZumboes comments are 'divisive' to huntersshooters( one word as we OUGHT to be ONE). SOmething Ted is explaining and Ted well understands. The left (KlintonsBradysShumersPoloseys)feeds off our divisiveness. Lets get it together. My last rifle purchase was black( bolt action) .223. I think my next may be a Dragunov. |
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
My original comments are below about the Jim Zumbo controversy. While many of you are quick to jump on the lets get rid of Jim Zumbo bandwagen, I want to clearly state that you should all research the amount of work he has done for this industry and for all of your rights in the hunting world! Take a look at his history in this industry and you will realize that he has done a tremendous amount of work for all of us in conservation, politics and the NRA!
MY COMMENTS Monday, February 19, 2007 Jim Zumbo Controversy Jim Zumbo has made a tremendous mistake stating that no hunter should ever use an assault rifle to hunt with and listing the AR-15 as an assault rifle. More then likely he is going to pay for that comment with the loss of a career as one of the great hunting writers of all times! The domino's are already falling! I personally hope he makes it through this! The following is posted on the Remington Arms web site: Remington to Sever Sponsorship Ties with Jim Zumbo Remington Arms Madison, North Carolina As a result of comments made by Mr. Jim Zumbo in recent postings on his blog site, Remington Arms Company, Inc., has severed all sponsorship ties with Mr. Zumbo effective immediately. While Mr. Zumbo is entitled to his opinions and has the constitutional right to freely express those opinions, these comments are solely his, and do not reflect the views of Remington. "Remington has spent tens of millions of dollars defending our Second Amendment rights to privately own and possess firearms and we will continue to vigorously fight to protect these right," commented Tommy Millner, Remingtons CEO and President. "As hunters and shooters of all interest levels, we should strive to utilize this unfortunate occurrence to unite as a whole in support of our Second Amendment rights." We regret having to terminate our long-standing relationship with Mr. Zumbo, who is a well-respected writer and life-long hunter Outdoor Life Comments as well: Due to the controversy surrounding Jim Zumbo’s recent postings, Outdoor Life has decided to discontinue the “Hunting With Zumbo” blog for the time being. Outdoor Life has always been, and will always be, a steadfast supporter of our Second Amendment rights, which do not make distinctions based on the looks of the firearms we choose to own, shoot and take hunting. Please direct any comments you have to [email protected]. Jim's Apology: I was wrong, BIG TIME Someone once said that to err is human. I just erred, and made without question, the biggest blunder in my 42 years of writing hunting articles. My blog inflamed legions of people I love most..... hunters and shooters. Obviously, when I wrote that blog, I activated my mouth before engaging my brain. Let me explain the circumstances surrounding that blog. I was hunting coyotes, and after the hunt was over and being beat up by 60 mph winds all day, I was discussing hunting with one of the young guides. I was tired and exhausted, and I should have gone to bed early. When the guide told me that there was a "huge" following of hunters who use AR 15's and similar weapons to hunt prairies dogs, I was amazed. At that point I wrote the blog, and never thought it through. Now then, you might not believe what I have to say, but I hope you do. How is it that Zumbo, who has been hunting for more than 50 years, is totally ignorant about these types of guns. I don't know. I shot one once at a target last year, and thought it was cool, but I never considered using one for hunting. I had absolutely no idea how vast the numbers of folks are who use them. I never intended to be devisive, and I certainly believe in United we Stand, Divided we Fall. I've been an NRA member for 40 years, have attended 8 national NRA conventions in the last 10 years, and I'm an advisory board member for the United States Sportsman's Alliance which actively fights anti-hunters and animal rights groups for hunter's rights. What really bothers me are some of the unpatriotic comments leveled at me. I fly the flag 365 days a year in my front yard. Last year, through an essay contest, I hosted a soldier wounded in Iraq to a free hunt in Botswana. This year, through another essay contest, I'm taking two more soldiers on a free moose and elk hunt. When I started blogging, I was told to write my thoughts, expressing my own opinion. The offensive blog I wrote was MY opinion, and no one else's. None of the companies that I deal with share that opinion, nor were they aware of what I had written until this firestorm started. Believe it or not, I'm your best friend if you're a hunter or shooter, though it might not seem that way. I simply screwed up. And, to show that I'm sincere about this, I just talked to Ted Nugent, who everyone knows, and is a Board member of the NRA. Ted is extremely active with charities concerning our wounded military, and though he's known as a bowhunter, Ted has no problem with AR 15's and similar firearms. My sincerity stems from the fact that Ted and I are planning a hunt using AR 15's. I intend to learn all I can about them, and again, I'm sorry for inserting my foot in my mouth. Jim Zumbo MY COMMENTS: Jim Zumbo is probably finished as an outdoor writer because of this comment, even though he has apologized and the current article and apology were quickly removed by Outdoor Life. I hope that is not the case! I have always been a really great fan of Mr. Zumbo, his writing, and especially his television show. His tremendous amount of conservation work, his empathy for the people he hunts around and with, and his respect for the animals he hunts has always impressed me. I am saddened by the controversy surrounding this very explosive issue because I looked forward to the opportunities to sit with my 3 kids and watch Jim Zumbo on television and share with them the stories that he brought from all around the world hunting in remote lands. Jim Zumbo, you still have my respect, I am glad you apologized and I wish you the best and I hope this blows over quickly so I can show my kids the wonderful world you brought us. While I personally will never choose to hunt with an assault rifle or an AR-15, I will not tell anyone in this world that they cannot hunt with one as long as they are accurate with that weapon. Whomever I do hunt with needs to be practiced and accurate with whatever they choose to hunt with. NUFF SAID! |

WHERE'S ZUMBO
The Jim Zumbo thing is quiet now. His sincere apologies continue. Is he still at Ted Ranch gettin re-absoluted?
|
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
I dont think Zumbo is sorry for the damage he did, I feel he's sorry that he got caught so to speak. He's been to stupid to many times. From wolves, to the USO, to this. All he cares about is JIM ZUMBO and thats the bottom line, if it doesnt affect him personally, he could care less what it does to the rest of us.It's time for him toretire. If he retires I'll accept his appology.
|
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
I will be happy to see him do an AR hunt. When he does hewould be welcome in my camp anytime, and I hope he doesn't retire. Hunting needs advocates, gun people need to stick together, and I hope he stays with it until he is no longer able.
|
RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
I guess he won't be able to expect being re-hired, but I hope he still gets to make it back to some degree of is former glory.

RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
Yes Jim has done many good things for hunters and shooters. He has built up a huge castle (figure of speech)of pro hunting/ gun work in the past to help protect us all. But when you drop a nuke, like what he said in his blog, you just destroyed that castle and everything around it for miles.
Many people do many things in their lives to help other people but every now and then one of these wonderful people short circuits, flys off the handleand kills someone for no aparant reason. Should we all look the other way and forgive and forget, because of their humanitarian past, the fact that they murdered another person or should they rot in a prison? Yes this is more dramatic but the samereasoning applies. |

RE: Zumbo talks on Nugents Forum
Everyone has an opinion so I might as well add mine.
Zumbo has done more for the sports of hunting and shooting than 99.9% of the very people on forums such as this have ever done or will ever do. Yes he made a illthought comment of a questionable rifle type (IMHO). He admitted to his mistake yet the power of internet bashing has brought him tons of grief. The hunting and shooting sports can ill afford to loose such a staunch supporter of our rights. To compare Zumbo's comment to someone dropping a nuke with intent to murder or blow up a castle is just inane. And shows the ridiculous comments taken out against one whom we should be embracing in our folds. Facts are facts Zumbo said it. But he is also a bigger supporter of private gun owership thru the 2nd Ammendment then anyone else I know. If I had a choice between his use of pen or Nugent's trash talking in your face BS I'd want Zumbo on my side every time!!!!! |
