Processer spoiled my elk!
My wife picked up the meat of my first elk from the processor. She just called me at work and said the meat is spoiled! I shot the elk on Jan 15 and dropped it of as soon as we got back to town on the morning of the 16th. The elk was skinned within 2 hours of being shot and the temp. never got above 30 degrees from the time it was shot to the time it was delevired. When I dropped it off he said it would be ready in about a week. A week went by and he never called. We tried many times to get in touch with him and on the rare occasion that we did he always had anexcuse why we couldn't get it. He either didn't have the keys to the shop, was out of town or had a family emergency. The guy is about 50yrs old and twice in this time he used the grandma died excuse. After both of these he used the grandma sick in hospital excuse. Three days ago we stopped by and my wife sat in the car while I went to the door. His wife said he wasn't home. My wife seen him through the window walk to the back of the house before his wife ansewered the door. I told here to file a report today. It is not often I get mad enough to shake but this has done it. It's not so much the disrespect of me, it's the disrespect to the elk. I get very upset about things like that. His name is Kendall and his shop is called the Butcher Block in Woodward OK. Help me out and spread the woed guys.

RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
man that really sucks, sounds like he screwed up early on and was rightfully afraid to face the music. I would report him to the BBB at the very least. And if I had friends on the PD an ass whoopin may be in order !

RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
I would hire a lawer and find out what the market value of domestic elk is. If he won't fess up to his error, then put it to him.
|
RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
good call i would do the same.
First call your local fish and game and see what they have to say. Might save you the attorney fee's. |
RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
If that doesn't work SUE him!
|
RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
Wow that sucks i know if i were you i would try and get something out of it since he screwed you over.
This is just one of the reasons i was fortunate enough to beable to learn from a prof butcher on how to cut animals up so therefore im able to do my own. |
RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
This is the first time for me to use a processor. I always did deer myself. The elk was just too much meat and I had to leave for work the next morning. My job requires me to stay here and supervise this drilling rig 24hrs a day in 4 day shifts. We are already taking legal action. Because of his poor ethics and total disrespect of wildlife I plan to stick it to him as hard as possible. In just a few hours I have already came across 2 other people he has done this to. I plan to do everything I can to put a stop to this.

RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
SRY to hear that, thats why I do it myself any more. Its sad to waste good meat.
|
RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
Excuse my ignorance.. but how is it possible to spoil the elk? Leave it out in the heat? You would think processors have ALL the equipment needed such as a cooler...
|
RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
That really sucks. I would go the BBB route and or small claims court.
Good luck! |
RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
One time, my grandma said that they got a deer back from the processor, and that when they opened the package, there was deer crap on top of the meat!!!!! So they never used that one again!

RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
will79: First, do everything you can to put it to that processor. Second, make sure everyone around those parts knows this guy's methods and bad practices, put an ad in the paper if you can. Three, in the future do your own processing. An elk is, what? three times as much meat as a deer, four times as much meat as a deer? So you just cut on them for four times as long or get a few friends to help you out. The same process is used. I don't like the idea of using processors for lots of reasons. The worst case is your experience, but even in the best case do you really know what you are getting? Are you sure he is giving you all your tenderloins, all your backstrap? Are you sure you are getting your meat or is it possibly the meat of some other guy who let his animal lie on the ground for 18 hours before field dressing it and packing it out? You don't know. Process all your meat yourself, always. That is my opinion and other opinions are likely going to be different.

RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
There are good processors and bad. I've never used one beyond having some pepper sticks and salami made.Talk to the warden, what he did may qualify as wanton waste of a game animal. It would have been good if you had a witness to the condition of the meat as soon as you got it. He will try to argue that you must've let it thaw and then it spoiled and you refroze it. Ridiculous, but if you are seeking a small claims settlement, prepare for such things.Realistically if it thawed and was refroze, the paper would show considerable blood soakage. His stamps indicating cuts on the paper confirm he wrapped it.
I seriously encourage anyone to process their own meat. Even when in college living in an apartment, we would throw all the stuff in the fridge in coolers and put the boned elk quarters in the fridge (made a bloody mess, but that's what 409 and papertowels are for). You can do an elk in one sitting or a quarter an evening. As stated above get a friend and you can get an elk done in an evening. |
RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
Proccessing your own game can be a fun experiance for the whole family and even your friends.
Back in the day we used to get together, have the grill going, football game, beers and everyone had a job. Gals wrapped, older kids trimmed cuts for burger or sausage, the men would do the major cutting. When done with cutting the sausage proccess would start and every one was given a job. |
RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
That sucks, I'm glad that guy dosen't live by me.

RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
Will79,
There is a domestic elk ranch several miles north of Stroud, OK. I don't know exactly where it is but I can find out if you want. I've driven past it several times with my old rodeo buddy who lives inStroud. I would at least make him replace the meat. If you know where he can get an elk, he has no excuses. I would then contact the local game warden as this definatly sounds like wantonwaste to me. Good luck. |
RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
We have our own crooked processer here! He charges $5 per deer hind qtr to wash, then $5 per to cut and wrap,2.89 per lbs. for German sausage, plus 2.50 per lbs. for regular sausage, plus he weights the total you bring in and adds $1 per pound total!I had a friend take in 2 hams from his deer, total of 45 lbs. and when he got the call it was ready the totol was $181!Now get this...since season is over the guys running adds to pay fraction of processing fees and get some deer meat!Alot of people told him to stick it and wouldn't pay or pickup their meat! My dad took 375 lbs. of elk a few years ago (boned out) and when he went to pick it up there was only 150 lbs. left!Dad whipped one of his employee's cause the crooked sucker wouldn't come out for his a#& whipping!

RE: Processer spoiled my elk!
WOW, I would be really pissed. To bag an elk and have it go to waste after you trusted someone with it is a real bummer. I have never dealt with a crooked butcher befor but I have seen a few that charge an additional $20 to cape it out. When I mean cape I am refering to cutting up to the last vertbrea and leaving the whole hide attached to the head. But what i don't understand is don't they have to do that anyway? Why charge for it? I am a taxidermist and half theprocessors that charge extra for this end up leaving half the neck meat in thereand it goes to waste.
