...as in, settle in for the show. Lots of opinions about the "best" big game rifle, and folks here aren't shy about sharin'.

I would go 260 rem for the small bore but extremelyhigh performance type...300 mag for the meat and potatoes and 45-70 for sure for the "add a twist guy!!!

RE: Top Three Big Game Calibers?

These aren't the top three "big game" cartridges, for sure. But if you're going to hunt caribou and moose, I'd start at the .270 Win.

Then, I'd have someone in the party get a .30-'06.

Last, if you can find one, a .35 Whelen would be sooooo sweet!

Contrary to popular belief, you don't need a "magnum" to kill caribou or moose.

In fact, you can always go to the short action version of each of these...a .260 Rem or a 7mm-08 Rem, a .308 Win and a new .338 Federal or a .358 Win.

All of these will knock the **** out of a moose, and won't hurt your shoulder in the process.

.300 wm-- .338wm --- 45/70 lever Thats a pretty awsome trio. There are alot of in between and alot bigger, faster i can do this and that but those three will work.

RE: Top Three Big Game Calibers?

To get both animals, you will need a gun with some "umpth" but also a flat shooting gun. Also, as stated, you don't need to get a truly big "knock you down with the recoil"gun for the game you are after. Calibers I would choose in this order:

7mm rem mag
300 win mag
30-06

Also, I would suggest a bolt action. Don't want a semi-automatic or a single shot if you happen to have a grizzly charge!

If all Three where for myself the list would be:

280 Rem
338 Ultra Mag
416 Rem Mag

With those three I have the every kind of biggame covered from North America to Africa.

In the situation you described where there are three seperate individuals who need weapons but want each one to be different I would say:

338 Win Mag
338 Ultra Mag
300 Ultra Mag

RE: Top Three Big Game Calibers?

Who needs three,I would go with a .338 win mag.
Top three for me since you could be shooting 300+ yds at bou. would be as follows.
1.300 Ultra mag 180 gr partions
2..338 win Mag 210 gr Partions
3.7mm Rem Mag 160 gr Partions
Bou are not hard to kill, but shots can be a stretch.Wan't enough umph for moose(plus when your are covered in blood the reasurance is nice).
I would go bolt gun all the way,and a nice 2.5-10 or 3-9 scope.

Use good bullets to each rifles liking, all are flat shooting for the longer shots and still have plenty of energy when they get there.

I agree with everything except on the Grizzly charge. I'll take my .300 WSM bolt action with me if I go to hunt big bear some day but I will also have a good buddy with either a semi-auto or shotgun.

1. 7mm rem mag all the way
2. .325 wsm
3. .308

if you guys have the 7mm, you are good to go, after that one, just pick guns that they are comfortable shooting, the 325 hasvery nice trajectory and downrange power, and the 308 comes in justabout every kind of gun for the guy that likes the lever, semi, single, or bolt

How? all 3 of these cartridges basically offer the same thing, with the 7mm mag and 30-06 offering almost equal ballistics, and the .308 not too far behind.

Do they all not perform?
I was almost certain any ofthem threewould be enough medicine.
How many guns can one man carry in the mountain?

30-06
375
50 BMG

Better?

Substitute the 30-06 with the .300 Win Mag, and the 50 BMG, with the .416 Rem Mag, and you'll have a keeper.

Now we can't go exchanging the .30 of 1906.
That would be like asking me to leave my Bowie at home.;)

I use an '06 and a 7mag backup.
Ithrowed the .308 in there in case one of the shooters wanted a short action.
