Default Moose Hunting in Alaska

This is a picture of a Moose I took in September of 2006. It turned out to be a very easy hunt, but as soon as the moose was down, then all the work started!! We got to our hunting location around noon, had camp completely set upand eaten lunch by 2:00 pm. Dropped the moose a little after 6:00 pm. I called him in using my own voice from about 300 yards out and the killing shot was taken at 39 yards. It doesn't get any easier than that.Rack was a 44 inch spread with 3 browtines on each side. Weighed in about 1100 lbs.

Fortunately, I live in Alaska and get to do this EVERY year!!! Woowhoo!!
This bull was taken near Talkeetna, Alaska and we got to our Moose Camp by truck and then hit the trails via ATV.This year's hunt was VERY easy, normally, it's much harder and you could spend 2 weeks in the woods and never see a bull. This year, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time and SCORED!!!! Took him with a Ruger M77 MKII in .338 Win Mag.

You guys have got to find a way to come to Alaska or Canada and do a great moose hunt. Man, the heart gets pumping and hands get all sweatly and there's nothing more awesome that calling in a big old bull moose. This one turned out to be quite tasty and sure did fill the freezer!!

In the picture above, although you really can't see it, about half of that moose was in about 10 inches of water. Here is a photo of me using the ATV to pull him on to DRY land andanother of us preparing to field dress him.

Zeke...Nice pictures and story..Thanks for sharing...

You're lucky to be able to hunt someplace where you can use the ATVs to retrieve the huge critters...I've been in on three moose kills in AK, all on unguided float plane drops, and packing all of that meat to camp on your back gets old REAL fast... I'd love to do it again, but I'm getting to old for that stuff...I'd need several, young strong dumb helpers with me to do the "bull" work...

Funny, you got a shotgun in the front of the ATV. In case there's a grizzly I suppose?

Yeah, that's the CAMP gun (ie, bear protection). If you notice under my right arm/shoulder in the pic, my rifle is in the Kolpin Gun Boot. That was a fun and tiring afternoon. Lot of work cleaning that bull, but well worth the effort!!
Thanks to all for the great comments. May you all be as lucky on your next hunts, and have a Merry Christmas!!!!

Talkeetna you don't say. I was up there about 2 weeks ago and looking for a new home site.I think the Bald Mountain area is a good looking spot and am going to move up here most likely next year after the house sells in Montana. Going to wait till I meet the residency requirements and try and get some state land through auction.
Great little town. Just like the townI live in that got over run by the West coast long staters.( You got them here too in Los Anchorage)
Any way the reason I asked was I am planning for next years hunt up here( I am in Anchorage working) as was wondering what kind of aniimals the local guy's pull in from their little spots they can drive to. I am trying to get off the beaten path here as I don't know the area well and think a float hunt will allow for more ground covered, with more hunting area.
Anyway thanks Zeke.If your looking for someone to haul out your Spring BlackieYou know how to get in touch.
Thanks Again
