RE: MT elk
ORIGINAL: Anybody here draw the coveted Muley buck tag for the area? I drew a buck tag for 291 which is fairly close to 270. Do you know of the activity in 291 or have any tips for this unit? I'm planning on hunting BLM unless I get any better ideas. |

fdunford.
The 270 has over 3600 people apply for the 150 Mule Deer buck tags available every year. The most applied for area in the state. Nothing compairs to it for numbers of bucks. Look hard enough and put in your time and a new state record could come from here. I am fortunate to live across from this area and can glass it from my porch. Went out this morning after only drawing a Mule Deer doe tag and saw only 4 does, However did see over 15 bucks here are a couple of pics from this mornings hunt. Have some bigger deer on camera but my zoom works better for video which I can't upload.I am limited on the distance I can take photo's.291 is over by Drummond. Never hunted there but have hunted 292 above Turah. They do have some nice animals over there but not the quantity they have in these parts.forth photo was from last week. Sorry about the duplicates site won't let me delete Good Luck though. |
RE: MT elk
Dana,
Yeah we go in behind Gibson on the lake trail, cut accross the Lake atBig Georgeover toCabin Creek,Fish creek and Two shaks, and the North Fork are some of the areas we go.No we didn't carry a rifle, justthe side arms.Only saw one bear and it was a blackie. It was awful quiet not much elk activity, what do expect with 85-90 degrees and a 3/4 moon all night. We cut our trip short by a day thats why I'm back. With the brow-tine rule the spike and the 3x4 I had to pass.First night was cooooooooool, got around low 20's and 60's in the day.The next day was 40 at night and 80 + during the day and SMOKIE!!!. RE: MT elk
That gibson lake looked like a real good place to spring bear hunt with all the grassy flat around it and all the county behind it.One day I hike 16 miles by the map not gps hunting elk ,did not see any that day but I will never forget it .We went 4 for4 on elk that trip .Ishot a cow behind the bar.on the last ridge. That was a trip of a life time 28 days wy. and mt. came home with 4 elk 3 pronehorns and 5 deer.that was in the mid 1990s .Next year I will devote my whole season on the quest of one good bull for my game room wall.I'll bow hunt then return to rifle hunt ,if I have to.I have 2 points fornext year so I am expecting to be there.good luck.

RE: MT elk
Are you talking Sun Canyon Lodge and bar or what used to be called Pat's Place up by the lake??If you are talking about Sun Canyon we hunt that alot during rifle when the snow flies cause the elk migrate to the game range.I shot a 5 point up there a few years back. The guy that owned Pat's place moved and I geuss was killed in a accident in Colorado this spring.
Well good luck, and that sounded like one heck of a trip. BBJ |
