I recommend a 300-winchester magnum.
I hunted with only one "big game" rifles (300-win mag)for 12-years. I never had the money or desire to buy a second rifle at that time. I have killed several elk, mule deer, whitetails, antelope & black bear with my 300-win mag.
Since that time I have added a fewbig game rifles. They are as follows 25-06, 270, 7mm-08,30-06, 7mm-s.t.w. & 375-r.u.m.

IMHO, the 25-06, 270 & 7mm-STW are great antelope/deer rilfes.

IMHO the 30-06 is atmy low end / starting point for an elk rifle.

My 300-win mag is still my go-to elk rifle.
Looking back at my post, I think Iwill sell a few rifles.

And having taken several elk with the 7mmstw,I find it evenmore effectivethan the 30-06 for elk.

I'd recommend .300 WM. I know many who shot .338 for elk and .30-06 for 200 yards and under is a good choice, if you have to hunt more than elk (e.g. deer, black bear, moose) with 1 rifle, due to the variety of loads you can buy for it.

I'm going to go out and try to take my first Elk during the rifle hunt.
I'm looking for recomendations for a good caliber rifle for taking deer or elk.
My 2 Cents
If your going to go out and do Elk just a few times and will being doing more Deer hunting with your rifle, I would stay with the lower end. 270,7mm or 06 and the widemargin in betweenNo sense in taking a bigger caliber out for Deer. Also since you seem new to the hunting with rifles thing stick with a caliber that affords the most bullet styles and choices and least expensive cartriges.

.30-06 using Fed. high energy 180 grn. loads for elk, and
150-180 grn. Rem. Core-Lokts for deer.
