I'm needing some input on what type bullet to use on black bear?
45/70 with 405 cast or 405JSP? this my 2nd. & probably last trip to canada. I want the best hammer i can push (I load my own)
Experance is the best teacher. Thanks folks GB50

I like to get expansion on thin skinned game like black bear so I'd recommend a quality 405 grain JSP like those made by Kodiak Bullets out of Douglas, AK. No need for the deep penetration of a hard cast bullet on black bear, but it'd do just fine out of the .45/70, you'd at least have two good 45 caliber holes in him.

I would go with the LBT Style Hard Cast Bullet. You will get great cavitation and penetration. With a wounded Black Bear the hair will soak up agreat deal ofbood; I would rather the bear bleed from both sides. Good luck.

I have shot several big Bklack bears with the Hornady 350 grain round nose as well. I don/t think there is a better bullet out there. Great penetration and excellent expansion too.
