Cow elk hunt
#1
If I don't draw any of the tags I have applied for, which I'm sure will be the case again this year, I'm thinking about trying to get a left over cow elk tag in CO for unit 26. How does one go about getting a left over tag? Do I just call an operator? Can my friends and I apply as a group?
Has anyone ever hunted this early cow season? My main concern is the temp and my meat spoiling as this season is Sept 15-30. We camp about 2 miles from our trailhead in the wilderness area and the trailhead is a good hour drive to a processer (if necessary). Thanks.

In checking the huntodds.com site it appears that this unit may not have any left over tags, but is an underscubscribed unit. Does anyone have any suggestions on a unit I may apply for a left over cow tag, in any state where I might be able to bring home some meat for the freezer? I'm not asking for your secret spots just a place I can get away set up camp and enjoy the mountains. Thanks.

The draw tags are out and they leftover draw will happen in a while. Then the leftover tags left after that will go public. The DOW will answer all your questions by phone. You can also go to the web site and get a lot of info. Go to hunting, then big game.

Hope you can get the tags you want.
I am a bow hunter and hunt that time of year, every year. Skin and bone outthe meat and store in mesh bags. The nights are cool enough the meat will cool down. Depending how long you will be here, part or all of the season and when you kill an elk, take it to town and find someone with a meat locker to store it for you until you leave. It can still be 70 plus degrees during that season.
