There is a poll going for your favorite cartridge that you have killed elk with ,but I am curious as to how many elk you have actually killed and with which cartridges.Personally,I have killed 15 elk,one with the 257wby,five with the 7mmstw and nine with the 300ultramag.

Killed 3 elk with .243 and 1 with a .30-06. I'd have to say my favorite cartridge that I have shot an elk with would be the .30-06. The .243 is just too small. For clean effective kill EVERYtime.

I have killed 2 with my mod. 70,300win. mag .It has been very good to me it has taken whitetails ,mulies black bears, pronghorns,carabou and moose. My brothers son has used it and loves it also he truns 16 this summer and I think I,ll give it to him.My dad gave me a 300 rum this winter

When not using a bow I have killed elk with a .270 winchester, .7mm Rem Mag, .300 WBY .300 RUM. Out of the 4 rifles, I have killed the most with the .300WBY. But my bow is my choice of weapon during the september rut.

16 or more. 2-6x6, 2-5x5, 4 spikes & quite a few cows. All but one,were taken with a 30/06--shooting 180 grain bullets----mostly "core-lokts" with a couple Hornady "spire" points. 1 of the spikes was taken with a 54 T/C Renegade. CB

I have killed 4 elk. The first two were with a 30-06 and the 2nd two were with .338 RUM.

I have killed17-18 elk,only 5 have been bulls rest have been cows.The bull's I've shot 1 spike -7mm Rem mag,1-spike .338 win mag,1 rag 5x4 300 Ultra mag,1 5x5 300 wsm and a 3x4 rag 300 win mag.
The rest all have been cows,smallestgun used was a6mm Remand largest was my .416 rem mag.Most elk killed with one gun is3 cows fell to my Rem model 7600 30-06.

About 80%of those respondingmeet or exceedour "Elk Camp Minimums" (hunter's numbers from their past thru present).... it gets even better when you get around to studying their "today's favorite elk irons".

Some in the 20% groupdecried havingused toolittle gun.
Meanwhile, none in the 80% group complained about having "too much gun".
Observedno complaints in the 80% group regarding accuracy and ability to hit.

Saw evidence of many starting with smallbores and then finishing larger....
Saw very little evidence of starting with larger boresand finiishing smaller....

That's the numbers from the ones that have been out there and done it.

I'll never hunt any big game with any rifle except my rem 700 300 ultra mag, it drops em like a bad habit. This year I'm going to try myluck at handgun hunting with my new S&W 460. It would be SWEEEET to take my next elk with it.

BOTH OF MY BULLS WERE KILLED WITH LONG GUNS, MY 3X4 WAS KILLED WITH A MODIFIED SAVAGE 110 .270 AND MY LIL SPIKE WAS TAKEN WITH A .45 CAL BLACK POWDER. THE .270 WAS A REALLY FAST KILL BUT THE .45 JUST SEEMED TO TAKE FOREVER AND A DAY FOR TEH LIL BULL TO FALL.

All one shot kills and complete pass throughsexcept on one cow. I used a Cor-loct that hit the shoulder, went into the neck and I had to give a finishing shot. Mind bulletconstruction

Only had a chance to Bow hunt last year (Close but...well you know).
We'll crank it up again this year.:)

2 bulls- 270 150 gr. partitions both with in 150 yards, no pass through
6 cows- 270 all but one with 150 gr. partitions, one with 140 gr. fail safe and all at 200 yards or less, only on pass through, the fail safe
2 cows- 300 win. mag, 180 gr. partition, both 200 yards or less, both pass throughs

and now I archery hunt them!!

I'm with ya on that bowhunting,I had hunted deer witha bow but never a elk(and me being a Montanan),the rifle was always the way to go.
I took it up last year after a 7 year hiaetus,and man I tell you what I can't get enough.I just bought another bow a 80+ lb Tribute,now everyone is accusing me of using TO MUCH bow.:D:DKinda like magnumitis,never have enough.:D:D

I have to admit, this will be my fourth season of bow hunting elk, and I have yet to kill. It seems that my buddys, on the other hand, kill on the first day or two and I spend more time packing out meat than I do actually hunting!! Of course last year, I spent too much time chasing antelope when I should've been in the mountains, BUT I finally got my speed goat!!:)

I do miss rifle hunting with all my relatives. We were always, and they are still, very successful, BUT there's something about archery that I can't get enough of!!

Too much bow, not hardly possible!! Not enough bow, on the other hand!!

I am STUCK to my bow:)But hunt just as hard with other methods. hard to believe this will only be my 6th season coming up( started early 30s)

I have hunted elk 4 times and have gotten 3 elk. A 5x6 bull and a cow with a 30-06 Fed High energy 180gr Nosler Partitions. A cow with 300 Win Mag with Rem 200gr Swift A Frames.
