It took a while but I see that the 300 Win Mag is gaining ground. I believe it is about perfect for elk. Not a lot better than the 06 but it gives a little edge in range. A hunter would be well armed with either.

WhatI like is the fact that with all of these magnums that are consideredto be betterelk medicine the whimpy ole .270 Winchester is only in 4th place.
It's even ahead of the .338 Win mag that is widely considered the perfect elk cartridge.

One may have to be a bit more selective with shot choice but the 270 has been putting elk on the ground since 1925. I expect it will continue to do so. With todays bullets like the 150 TXS and the accubond and partition, there is no reason why the 270 needs to take a back seat to any cartridge. If a 270 is all I had, I wouldn't hesitate one second to use it for elk.

Only round I've ever used for elk, my 7mm Rem. Mag. (2 and counting!)
I have shot 4 mule deer with that caliber too, and 1 muley (my first) with a borrowed .270 win.
