I find that the best way to get used to the recoil of a new rifle is to hunt small game with it, I like shooting Rabbits, Hares and foxes with my 375H&H and now it feels like a 30/06 to me.
The secret to shooting a big game rifle well is practice practice practice and targets just don’t cut it IMO. So get out there and start dropping small game with your big guns and be a better hunter for it.

Say I found out that most of the red deer I have been shooting have been crossed with Wapiti (Elk) so if that’s the case then I have dropped quite a few ½ Elk with 6.5X55’s and a number of other calibres.

Put me down for the .270
I've killed more elk with the 30/06 but thats for the grizzlies that seem to be taking over the area.

ok i have yet to go elk hunting lack of drawing a permit but i bought a rem 700 bdl in 280 for the express purpose of killing an elk!!

I admire the spirit. One could even draw tags, go do the hunt and if one didn't get the elk, then it still wouldn't qualify. Sorry.
