Well we just got back this morning from our Elk hunting trip.We went to Northern N. Dakota 16 miles from the Canadian border. There was where deep cooleys heavily wooded and the flats on top.So slalking on top was out of the question but made for clear shooting.
At 5 am we got up got some breakfast. And headed for the hill county and the cooley we had decided to start the hunt after had been glassing some nice bulls the night before. With the wind in our face we started down the bottoms.Winding our way through the cooley.About a 150 yds in we heard a bull bugle. My blood began to really pump!!He sounded to be about 500 yds down the bottoms up wind of us.It was perfect. So the guide my buddy Jim and i worked our way quietly towards the bull watch to catch a glimps of any movement to pin point his location. Then we heard bulls fight above us on the flats. So we worked our way up to the edge of the cooley and flat.Where the two bulls where stand only 88 yds out.It was the perfect set up for Jim and i to take a bull togather.I was using a Rem 700 ML blackpowder rifle,in a 50 cal.Shooting a 240 gr 44 cal sabot, with a 100 gr chrg of pyrodex powder.Jim was shooting a 300 win mag, with 150 gr bullet.I anchored the first shot behind the bulls right shoulder. The second bull took off then stopped to look back at about 40 yds from my bull that had just dropped.Jim took the shot and nailed his bull behind the shoulder dropping his bull also in its tracks. It was awesome. We to be there to see each other take there first bull.
Both Bulls where 6x6's and scored nearly the same,Jim's being 320 3/8....And mine 318...Field dressed 980 lb.

It's not how big the Deer,But the size of the experiance that matters!!

Carpetguy, who did you hunt with? Was it a free ranging hunt, or a ranch hunt? The only reason I ask is because I thought you had to be a ND resident to hunt elk. Nice bulls!

Jeff it was a free range hunt.Non res. are eligible for Big horn,Elk and Moose. It was on private land about 6000 acres.
I was surprised that the guide told me they also have had mountain lion, wolf around. Not really the typical habitat for them. But then the canadian border is only 16 miles away.

great stuff carpet man! Actually at one point in time, Elk were just as much accustomed to the wide open areas as they are their current straight up habitat of today!
