Nice Mulie (pic)
Well, I got me a nice mule deer this year. What a way to end a season. The freezer is full and the beer is cold. I ended up with a bear, a white tail, a mule deer , and an elk this fall.

Yeap i'd have shot him to.

RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
Elkcrazy, you should thank me with some tenderloins for spooking all the game your way to idaho.;)
Bobby |
RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
121553, I think the tenderloins are the only parts of this buck that don't stink. The hole inside of my pickup smells like rutting buck. We killed another nice buck the night before. He wasn't very wide, but was unique in his own way with lots of mass. I don't think the beans ran off any game, but my hunting partner didn't like them very well:0)

RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
Huh-huh. That dang tarsal is real sweet smeeling from a rutting buck.;)
I shot a 5 pt p/y whitetail a few yrs back during the rut, swollen neck and huge body, that thing stunk as bad as my ex's cooking as I hauled him out.[:'(]I knew that thing was going to be some bad eating meat before I even processed it, but It actualy was one of the best eating deer I had ever gotten. Last yr during the last weekend of deer season I had to pick up my rifle and leave my bow at home just so that I wouldn't be eating tag soup and I shot a young 3pt mulie. It had a strong taste, but to me it wasn't near as good as any white-tail that I've gotten, it didn't taste bad, but it just tasted strong and I have shot whitetails in the same general area where I had shot this mulie and I'm sure there eating the same groceries. You figure? Bobby |
RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
Bobby, I don't think that anyone could ever compare mule deer to whitetail, especially when it comes to the old ruting bucks. I wish we had more whitetail around here, as i am mostly a meat hunter. This buck I am going to put into peperoni and sausage and save the elk and whitetail for the barbecue. I think that the difference in taste of the two deer may come from the fact that even though the two deer have the same food on their plate. They may eat a little more of one food than the other. This buck was killed in the extreme desert with nothing but bitter brush and very small pickings of green shoots left in the dry washes. His steaks would probably taste like my boot, but will make good table fare as sausage and peperoni.

Chad--Great looking buck & great year!!!! It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!!! I agree those rutters don't eat as well at all !!!!! But they're nice to look at!!
We went out the other day & my son and friend of his both took whitetails, the friend took a nice heavy 3-point & my son took a 5x6 150" buck, I don't think it'll eat all that great as it was in the rutting stages as well. But sometimes you have to give up something for the bigger ones!! Bobby, how the heck are you doing????? <grin> One of thesedays I'm coming down your way to visit you!!!! Put the coffeee on!!!!! RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
Congrats on the great hunting success this year!! I finally bagged my first mulie deer this year up in the panhandle around sandpoint. The season opened early just before the full blown rut. Fortunately the food sources are very good. The meat was fresh smelling like a whitetail. Absolutely no stink!! Thanks for sharing the pics.

RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
Chad, Nice looking Mulie. Congrats on a great season. I head out in the morning to rattle and call in mulies for the late season hunt. Are you up for a little wager for winter leagues? What night are you shooting? I will call you when I get back from my hunt and get together for that beer.
Congrats again, elkaholicid Michael |
RE: Nice Mulie (pic)

RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
elkcrazy i think you won the bet by a few inches, and i hope you like the cheap stuff (beer) besides, you can't tell the difference anyhow after a couple...I will try to drop it off this weekend!!

RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
Robinhood, I would like to take a look at the ruler that you were using (wink). You better be able to stay for a couple and have some of this whitetail stew that is brewing.
|
RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
Micheal, shoot me a call when you get back. I will be shooting thursdays downtown when the animal league starts back up. They stopped it for late season as the attendance was low. Better watch the wagering, I have a new pro-elite on order. Those bows shoot themselves.

RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
Nice buck ElkCrazy.. very nice..congrats...
Hey are you guys buying the non-resident deer tags down there for your second buck? If so are they whitetail only or can you all buy a non res... regular deer tag and shoot two mule deer???? just curious..I noticed you said you got a whitetail and this mule deer. Up here in the panhandle we can buy two. Once again..congrats.. Troy |
RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
Shed, I only got one tag for Idaho this year. I killed the whitetail on a Nebraska archery hunt. I was seeing a HUGE whitetail buck in the unit I drew in, in which I could use my tag for either or. He failed to show up so I went after a big mulie. Some guys are buying 2 tags for deer and paying the NR price for the second. I have shut myself down for this year and will take a couple of months off from hunting. The next animal on the list is spring bear!!!!!!Til then, I will shoot nothing but foam............

RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
Really nice buck, slim and none chance I'd pass on it.
Not sure how your cooking it. Regardless of what time of the year it is, I soak it for a couple of hours in cold water with a bit of salt, after trimming as much fat and silver skin etc as possible. Then dry it and spice with salt, pepper, rosemary and what ever else you might like (I found a pepper medley that works well). I think soaking it helps a bit. Anyway when I cook it (and anyone who tries this is best to do it outside on the side burner of the bbq, stinks up the house) I heat a frying pan (cast is best) as hot as I can it and basically sear the outsides for about 2 minutes each side in bacon fat or vegitable oil. then put a lid over it on a reduced heat until its the way you like it. I have never had a bad one yet, and I don't like strong flavors. Anyway just a thought that might help. |
RE: Nice Mulie (pic)
congrats on a succesful hunting year, now u just need some wild pig to go with!
