This last weekend i went out bear hunting and i shot a black bear when i shot it the bear dropped instantly, I was aiming high on the front shoulder but when i walked up to the bear i found out that i wiggled and hit it in the neck then the bullet deflected into the top of the skull between the eyes, lucky wiggle;)

1/3 up from the bottom of the animal, just behind the shoulder usually does the trick. But sometimes they have run on me, and there is nothing I hate worse than seeing an animal run away from the point of impact. To prevent that I really like a spine shot.

RE: whats your most deadliest shot
If I'm close the most deadly shot I can take is a neck or head shot(just behind the jaw at the base of the head and neck)but thats not always the case, more than often I place the sight just behind the shoulder on the back of the elbo of shoulder joint.
Hey moose what the heck is a WIGGLE? BBJ |
RE: whats your most deadliest shot
My deadliest shot was a mule deer doe that was about 10 yards away looking straight at me. Shot her with a 7mm magnum and the bullet entered her throat patch and blew out the back of her neck. Needless to say she didn't do anything but hit the ground.

RE: whats your most deadliest shot
big bulls.... are u sure that was enough gun?[:-] lol
if i am close i like the neck shot just as BBJ said, with rifle! bow i like just above the elbow... |
RE: whats your most deadliest shot
If I am close enough then its the head or neck. If not I like the high shoulder shot. Above the shoulder blade just between that and the spine. Next choice is the heart/lung shot.

RE: whats your most deadliest shot
my most deadly shot was on the only whitetail i've killed this last year. he was trotting away and i shot him clean high in the neck and he litterally dropped in his tracks. all he did was have muscle contractions in one of his back legs. nothing else moved.

My first successful muzzleloader elk hunt. I was stillhunting in oakbrush and jumped some elk that heard me/maybe saw me, but wasn't sure what I was. I cow called and they came right back to me. A 5x5 bull stopped in the open 15 yards from me! However, I only had a COW tag! The cow stopped right behind a thicket of oakbrush. The only hole through the brush was where the part of her neck just behind her head happened to stop. Shot through the hole with my 54 caliber 425 grain maxiball. She hit the ground without even twitching.

I was wild pig hunting with my dad and a few friends. I was using a .300 Savage Magnum with scope. I spotted a Sow down in a gully about orginally about 400 yards out. Due to the terrain and heavy brush, I knew I was going to probably only get a quick but ehatical shot. She came out of some brush about 275 yards. I took aim and fired. I was aiming for the middle of her back (hearts and lungs). I actually was little off target (due slight change of wind) but I was able to hit at the base of the neck/head and she dropped instantly.

RE: whats your most deadliest shot
Although I have moved away from Barnes X bullets in recent years in favor of the new bonded polymer tipped missles, one of the deadliest shots I have made is with an animal looking right at me - hit 'em high in the chest with the X bullet - bullet penetrates almost end-for-end - all four legs buckle at once - lights out. Did this with two deer and an elk.

ORIGINAL: Red Hawk I was wild pig hunting......... I was using a .300 Savage Magnum with scope...........hit at the base of the neck/head and she dropped instantly. Anyway........... For me.. my favorite kill shots are the lungs/heart every time with the double lung my favorite. I think if you hunt big game you are risking waaaay to much and would highly recommend you stay AWAY from the shoulder no matter what on an Elk. You will chase alot for miles and wonder why you never found them more than less shooting there. Works for some game, but why chance it? Hole in the lungs or heart only has 1 result... DEAD and they usually don't run that far. |
RE: whats your most deadliest shot
My most deadly shot came with a bow - on a white tail deer. I was in a tree and she was walking away from me and it was the last day of the season - Thanksgiving 1970. I shot too high and she heard it and threw her head up at the wrong time and caught the arrow in the back base of her skull. Crumpled right on the spot.
Loaded the doe up in my truck and brought it home. My wife saw it and started vomiting. June of next year we had a baby girl. My wife says "don't bring deer home anymore". |
RE: whats your most deadliest shot
My favorite shot is a little different than what I've seen here. I don't like neck shots. spine shots ruin to much prime meat. I prefer a slightly quartering away shot with a rifle. The reason is I can take out both lungs and the offside shoulder. Works like a charm for me. If they do try to run they can't cover more than 40 or 50 yards carrying a shoulder. The shoulder meat is mostly hamburger and jerky meat anyway so if it gets a little shot up I don't mind. With a bow a double lunger is the only option in my mind. Of course I once used the deadly "texas brain" shot to harvest a whitetail.

RE: whats your most deadliest shot
My most deadliest shot (well I've had two) was when I was 15yrs old (11yrs ago), doe hunting with my dad on my first hunting trip where I was packing a rifle. It was a .3030 Winchester open sight. We were heading down a gravel/mud road to our "usual spot" and saw a doe feeding in a meadow. We stopped the vehicle and I walked into the meadow towards the doe (trying to make it a legal shot because in Oregon we're not allowed to shoot withing 50yds of the road). She got scared and trotted towards a wooded area and stopped. All I could see was the shadowed image of her head and shoulders. I pulled up the .3030 with the front sight on her head/neck. Pulled the trigger, and she paused then dropped. When we came up to her, she was long gone and we found the entry right behind the ear taking out the brain stem killing instantly. My other shot was on another doe a couple years later. Again we were heading out for the evening hunt and there were 4 does eating together about 75 yds off the road. Shot this one right in the neck hitting the spinal cord and she dropped instantly. All my other kills have been fairly similar (head/neck shots) except last year I took out half a hind quarter on my buck while he was on the run.

RE: whats your most deadliest shot
Well I'm not certain what you mean by "pie hole". what we call a texas brain shot, is shooting up the south end of a north bound animal. The ole a hole. ! |

Elk Anatomy Overview: http://www.bowhunting.net/NAspecies/elk2.html
In looking at an elk's circulatory system and bone structure, there appears to be two good spots to shoot for: ![]() 1. Heart and Lung area slightly behind the front leg / near the top of the shoulder. ![]() 2. Spine / Base of Neck Area. Following the forward portion of the front leg 1/2 to 2/3'rds up to where the neck meets the spine. There are a lot of major support bones in this area that when broken, should anchor the animal very quickly. |

RE: whats your most deadliest shot
I once hit a buck between the shoulder blades. He was jumping a brush pile andI drilled him there with my 308 at about 40 yards. Blew the briscut out and he landed deader then dead on his back. No meat ruined either!!:D
Wasnt there a post about a guy hitting a black bear directly in the eye!?! The pictureI sawshowed a refection from one eye and not from the other. Bet he didn't move at all. |
