Sorry Hoyt. I misread one of your earlier posts...I thought you were hunting in LA, and after your post, I realized your hunting in Louisa COUNTY...doh...
Anybody been out and chased some birds? I don't get out until the middle of May... |
RE: Official Team 20 "Strut's Wingbone Brigade" Thread
I have just hunted NC so far. SC trip got cancelled & I will hunt VA later in the season. Have heard plenty of birds, most are roost gobbling & then nothing else. Called in a couple of gobbling & strutting jakes on Saturday. Hopefully they will grow up for the future.

RE: Official Team 20 "Strut's Wingbone Brigade" Thread
Saturday was a short hunt...daughters 4th bday. Monday I called in a beautiful 25# plus within 50 yrds and he froze up. He was checking out the hen and Jake decoy for about 10 minutes but wouldnt come within that magic range. Another 5 or 7 yrds and I would have laid him down.
This morning I set up my blind on the opposite side of field and had decoys in food plot. I hooted before sunrise and heard him gobble a couple times, even called him in to within 50-75 yrds but never got a sight on him. It was like he just froze up, stopped gobbling and dissappeared. There is still tomorrow, and this is where I have my trail cam. I know there are at least two in this spot, but if I can get them to show there feathers its a different story. |

Good bird! Congrats to all that have succeeded so far. i've been outwitted all week long with several longbeards. I see them, communicate with them, but have not had an ethical shot yet. I've been trying with Bow for a few trips, but the Mossberg is coming out tomorrow morning and Saturday.
Will post pics and scoring ASAP! |

RE: Official Team 20 "Strut's Wingbone Brigade" Thread
I got one this morning!
22 lbs 8 1/2in beard 1in and 1 1/4in spurs Your score is 22 + 10 + 12.5 + 17 = 61.5 ![]() Sorry this is the best pic i got as of now. The season was about 10 min old when i shot him. He was the only close bird that i heard this morning. I did a few soft calls on my slate and he came right in. I was set up right next to the neighbors fence and he was on the neighbors property. When i first saw him i wasen't for sure if he was going to cross the fence, i figured he would just hung up just on the other side of the fence but he didn't. He saw b-mobile and then he just had to come in. He went under the fence, came up and struted around b-mobile, i putted at him, he put his head up and i shot him at 15 yards. Probably one of the best hunts i've been on. |
RE: Official Team 20 "Strut's Wingbone Brigade" Thread
MOhunter,
Nice bird! I bet you almost feel a little cheated that your first bird only took 10 minutes of action ;). Please see my PM...I'll post the score to the Captain's thread after your reply... S&R |
RE: Official Team 20 "Strut's Wingbone Brigade" Thread
Well boys... I helped out our score but not much unfortunately. We only had a couple days to hunt in an area we had never hunted before. Had to take a jake..
14 lb 15 oz 1/4 inch spurs 4.5 inch beard Your score is 14.9375 + 2.5 + 2.5 + 9 = 28.9375 ![]() |

RE: Official Team 20 "Strut's Wingbone Brigade" Thread
:)Congrats to all of you Tarhell, Mohunter46 and Brushchimp!!! Well I got one guys. I had planned to use my bow but I was running out of time so- I used the trusty ol gun and on the last day of the season... I got a jake. He sure aint a monster of a bird, but I have never worked so hard for a turkey. I have been hunting these great creatures for awhile and I think that I spent more time on him than I have my last 10 birds. I will post pic and stats later. What a blast !!! Yea!!!! :D

RE: Official Team 20 "Strut's Wingbone Brigade" Thread
Great job guys! It's nice to see people getting out and bagging some beards ;)
Brushchimp: That is a real nice pic, and that looks like some pristine turkey country... |
RE: Official Team 20 "Strut's Wingbone Brigade" Thread
Thanks y'all.. Well done by the rest of you too. Yeah, I've never hunted country like that before. It was great. Great views of Mt. Hood occasionally too. Sage flats, lotsa of scrub oak, mix with big conifers. It was the most open place I've hunted so far. Very nice to get a break from the dense rainforest of Western Washington, lol.

Great job guys and gals!
Sorry, I only made it out for 2 days this year. I was swamped with preparing a presentation for a competition in Kona, Hawaii. I just go back this past weekend. The competition went well. Unfortunately, I saw and heard more birds on the Big Island than I did in Oregon... S&R |
RE: Official Team 20 "Strut's Wingbone Brigade" Thread
Sorry it took so long to get my post in but had a few issues to deal with here in Iowa. Well guys it was a pretty tuff season here, and I think in was because of the winter weather we had this year, we had some bad ice storms and I think it messed with the turkeys. Now I am looking forward to a hunting trip we will be taken out west this fall, then deer season after that. I hope to see all of you around this sight. Good luck to all this fall!!! If any of you need anything from my neck of the woods just hollar out I would be glad to help.
My turkey this year- 16 lbs 1/4 inch spurs 4.5 inch beard Not a big bird but I put one down!!! ![]() |
