RE: Moon Guide
I've been toting the solunar charts from espn.com in my daypack for some time now.
I guess there's a correlation, but usually in the areas where I hunt, deer activity levels are driven by so many intangibles it makes the chart pretty useless.
Last fall, however, I cashed in on a nice 9-point that I probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
Here's the story:
The moon was in the full phase, and was underfoot (peak activity on that particular day) at 4:30. I had been setting up at the edge of a cornfield and seeing all my deer at dusk (7:00). I had one day that week to skip out of work a bit early so I took a chance because it was nice out, and It was the last day of the week that I could hunt peak solunar time.
Well, at 4:00 I was in my stand, and at 4:25 two nice racks came moping out into the field - 2 hours ahead of schedule. The bigger one fed by and I got a deer that I would never have gotten without my trusty ESPN.com chart. Best of all - it's free on their website
If nothing else, it gives you a tangible reason to stay in your stand for one, two, three extra hours and it gives you a ray of hope on a day when you can't seem to see anything. Sometimes, 11 a.m. rolls around and you want to stretch your legs and come back at 4, even though you know you should stay. If peak time falls at 2:00, it gives you a reason to be there, keeping your nose on the grindstone.
