Have you checked to see if maybe you are getting feather contact? Of course you are going to get some, however if that bottom hen feather is turned straight down you'll essentially have 2 feathers dead centered into the bow, one on the shelf one on the riser. That very well can cause a slight high tear also, along with some fish tailing.

There is no real honest way to get it all out without going to paper or bare shaft imho.
