I agree with cleaning the shaft thoroughly. When I prep a carbon arrow for a friend I will use Scotchbrite pad with just a touch of scouring powder to lightly clean the area. Than wash the residue with water and dry. Before installing the vanes I will wipe the arrow and the base of the vane with lacquer thinner. It is very important to clean the vanes. There is often a residue from the release compound applied to the molds with the vanes are poured.
