Man, this year has been getting better as the season rolls on! I went out on my first night of moose hunting last night, and connected within half an hour! We went to a thickly wooded area, that has some open patches of willows. There stood a nice bull, harrassing a cow with a calf. We stalked within 30 yards very easily, and waited for them to get into position. I was on one side of a line of brush, and my buddy was on the other side of it. The bull worked his way into about 20 yards, turned and offered a perfect quartering away shot. I drew, put my pin right in the sweet spot, and he took two steps right into the brush. He moved forward right into my buddies lane and he came to full draw. He waited just a little too long and the calf moved right between him and the bull. He quickly let down and I moved through the brush getting a perfect broadside shot at 25 yards. The arrow flew perfect and centered a rib going in and coming out of him. He jumped and ran about 5 steps, then started walking off. I could see about 4" of my 29" Beman arrow tipped with 125 grain Muzzy broadhead sticking out of his far side and about 2" of fletching on the side that I had hit him. He went 40 yards and laid down. About 10 seconds later he got up, went in a circle and laid down facing us. I snuck around him and crawled up to 10 yards from him, put another arrow on my string and put a 3 sided hole right through the top of his heart. Both shots were double lunged, but since I had the chance to put another arrow into him, I didn't pass.
He measures right at 40" and has some neat character on his antlers. He still had some velvet, but had worked his antlers pretty hard so far. His tops were rubbed down, he had 2 brow tines broken off, plus nuerous other tines broken, and a 5" drop tine. My caribou I shot on the 24th of July had a 9&1/2" drop tine too!
It's been a great year so far! I shot a P&Y black bear in May, a non-typical caribou in July, and now a 1,000 plus pound moose in Sept. I also shot a wide spread bou on July 31st with a 270, and a small bull bou on the 4th of August with a 30-06. I'm off to Montana a week from today to hunt elk for nearly two weeks with a couple of board members. The rest of the year will be devoted to sucking up to the wife! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
I hope all of you get to share the rush I felt last night during this coming season! Hands shaking, heart beating fast, blood pumping through my body, adrenaline flowing...
BOWHUNTING = THE GREATEST HIGH IN THE WORLD!!!!!
I should have pictures up before I leave to Montana next Friday. I'll post when I update my photo album.
