Default RE: WHAT LOAD FOR FIRST ELK?

I double-dog, dad-gum guarantee you that 180-grain Speer Nitrex ammo will shoot as good or better than any other factory ammo in your '06 and do it with a bullet that was made with elk and the '06 in mind when it was created. The Speer Grand Slam bullet (which is what is loaded in the Nitrex) performes as good or better than any other bullet on large game at velocities between 2000 and 2500 fps. I have found the Grand slam to be a very accurate bullet in most all guns in which I hand load it.

That said, you may find that you have a rifle that does not like 180-grain bullets at all. This is not unusual in 30-06s, as most are manufactured to perform best with 165 grain or lighter bullets. In this case, you nneed to go with one of the super premium 165-grain loads like the Fail Safe, Trophy Bonded or Barns X. With these bullets, 165 is as good as anybody else's 180-grain bullet.
