Pre64 is referring to a mod 70 winchester action with a claw extractor. Some believe they cheapened the rifle after that and push feeds came along and it was all over.
Not quite. In 1964, Winchester revamped their entire product line. Some of their line was dropped compleately, other models were tweeked to make production faster, cheaper, and more efficient. The Model 70 and Model 94 were two of the rifles that had design changes done to them. They stayed in production, but were changed.
Bottom line was Winchester's designs, machinery, and tooling could not be competative with other manufacturers unless they took drastic steps to streamline their line. They did, and people have been whining about it ever since!
I occasionaly see references to a "Pre '64" Remington, or other company's guns. Simply means whoever made the reference is ignorant of the facts.
