I don't want to speak for Duffy, but the 300 Savage round he speaks of is just a bit below the 308 in power and effectiveness. I'm not trying to sell it short, just wanting to make sure you understand it's relative effectiveness. It appeared to me, from your brief comments, that you may be attributing the "300" of the Savage round to the "300" of some other more potent rounds.
The 300 savage is plenty gun for a lot of big game animals. But don't view it as more than it is. If you place it just a rung below the 308 you have a good idea of its very ample effectiveness. it is actually just a little below the 7.62 X 54 Russian, which is just below the 308. All 3 are fine rounds though.
