I am amazed right now. No one named their trusty 338RUM, 375 H&H, or even many big .30 cal mags?
Rusty,
IMHO, most folks that have the bigger boys also have cross section of the little ones(270, '06, etc.) and in their hunting, they generally match the tool to the job (assuming they hunt a fair range of game) and don't get emotionally hung up on "ole Betsy" or the singing of her praises ad nauseum as though she were "the only one." Hence a general lack of interest in "go to gun" discussions when, for them, it will all depend on the question, "For What?"
A 30-06 is a great place to start out, add a 12 gauge and a 22LR and you have a fair starter battery of long guns. The more specialty rifles you add the more the 30-06 (jack of all trades) will tend to fade IMO. Regarding accuracy, if they all fit you, have the triggers to similar adjustment, and wear good scopes, then it just doesn't take much to put rounds "right in there" with any of them. Bowhunting, now that is a talent.
