i would try wal-mart for a rifle. they will usually match the price of other stores. are you looking for wood or synthetic stocks? the most common caliber for wal-mart is the 30.06 but i bought my .300 rum from them. i would try maybe a Remington model 700 adl in the .300 win mag and order a burris fullfield II from swfa on line. you should be able to get this packaged for under $700. knowing that your son is graduating college he'll probably have more time hunting. he should enjoy that present. good luck.
