i've got a fixed 4X leupold on my encore (7mm-08 w/15") that i have killed a few deer with, i was advised to go with a 2X but decided i knew more than the people advising me, it's not that i don't like the 4X, but target aquisition is a little funny, takes some getting used to, mine is mainly fired from a rest which helps a whole bunch, i'd try to find someone with both power scopes and see which you prefer.
