I too am going to try some alfalfa this summer. The thing to think about is whether or not you have deep well drained soils, and the ph should be between 6.5-7.5. The root system of alfalfa is very deep, so droughts should not effect it very much. They don't like to have their feet wet so be sure that the soil drains properly. The ph is THE most important factor for optimum growth.
I am going to try the Triple Crown alfalfa from the Southern States Co-Op. It is also a grazing alfalfa that is pre-innoculated and costs about $3.75 per pound. It takes about 20 pounds to plant an acre. So it is much cheaper than the Alfa-Rack. Try this website it should answer all of your questions
