RE: Make your own wingbone call
Tunig.
Once you have the bones fitting together try it. I use a little tape to seal the bone joints. then I practice. By trimming just a little more off the end or in the middle you can affect the pitch. I always start with the bones as long as I can and trim from there.
Or - leave them long but epoxy glue the opening of the radius bone - the mouth piece shut with just a dab of glue.
Once dry re-drill the opening. I use a conical dremel diamond bit. In fact I have done so many that once the drill sings - the call is tuned. By that I mean the bones just hum. I then brush the excess away as it cause epoxy dust and try it. The hole I leave in the mouthpiece is usually between 1/16 to 1/8 in diameter.
Wild Tukey bones are best to use. However I have bought wings - cooked them, had a snack, and then made a call out of them.
The difference between store bought and wild shot are:
Radius bones are about the same (mouthpiece)
Ulna bone is about the same(middle bone)
Femur bone is much different.
It does not have the lace work of bone inside that you need to remove. It is more like marrow and can be tough to clean. But if you stay at it it can be done. Also the store bought bones are not as 'hard (dense)' as wild. The sotre bought was designed to grow quickly so the bone structure is weaker. But it can be done and it ain't all that bad of a call. Just more work.
Hope that helps.
