A .300 Win mag would only be too much if you couldn't handle the recoil. If you can handle it okay and shoot it accurately, then there's no reason not to use it. I use my .300 Weatherby (a little faster than the .300 Win) more than any other rifle when I'm deer hunting and I've never experienced what I'd call excessive meat loss. Use something like the Barnes Triple Shock (I like the 168 gr., myself) and you'll be fine.
