Seriously he was teaching my class when old Al Bolen came in to tell him Terry Bradshaw was drafted number one by the Pittsburgh Steelers. (you remember buffalo beat pittsburgh by a field goal the last game of the season?) Conversation:

Phil: "Terry Bradshaw? Number one? from L'il ole Louisiana Tech?"

Al: "Yep!"

Phil: "Well that dont happen too often does it?"

Al: "This is the first time a player was drafted 1st in the 1st round from a small college!"

Phil: "You know Terry didn't get to start til I quit playing football?"

Al: "Yep!"

Phil: "Huh!"

Phil: "You know the boy had a good arm but he wasn't too quick up here." (Phil taps his temple)

Al: "Well I guess he was smart enough to make the NFL."

Al leaves the room. Phil stares absently into an upper corner of the back wall.

Phil: "Guess the boy did awl rite. But I'll bet I killed more ducks this year than him." (Phil smiles.)

I saw Phil last bout 1985. Boy what a difference. Think by then he claimed to have clened up his maverick ways and was an itinerant preacher.
