It sounds like your the more educated hunter of you 2. However do you allow him to help make the plans and such for the upcoming hunt? Perhaps in your zest to get the most of your hunt, you inadvertantly, "take command". I think if he was more involved in the planning and organizing of the days hunt he may "stick to the plan better".
I've been in this situation and even though I feel I know more and can help our chances at success, if you don't let the others get involved they can spoil the plan.
It can be as simple as askin, " what do you think of this idea?"
Instill in him that permission must always be granted to hunt private land.
