Default RE: Out of the box accurate bolt action

Savage. In the past 2 years I have had 4 of them and seen 2 more shoot first hand as I was envolved in sighting in and setting up these 2 rifles.

1. 10FP-LE2B: .308 Win, 26" brl, McMillan tactical stock, one piece base, Leuplod 3.5-10x40 Mil-Dot scope, with hard case. The Accu-Trigger out of the box was a creep free 1 lb 12 oz. Savage sent this rifle to me back in 2002 for testing and evaluation. Man what a first class set up. I pulled out my Sniper weapon log, and the first group out of the box was sub-MOA. After 40 rounds of breaking in the barrel, I fired 15 groups for record with Fedreal 168gr. GM: .596, .632, .427, .384, .466, .674, .679, .710, .532, .362, .723, .598, .819, .454, .439
I was so impressed with the perfromance of this rilfe that I bought it from Savage. My buddies, on the sniper squad for the local police dept., have had it for the past year, as an extra/loaner sniper rifle for the LEO sniper schools they have been conducting. Per the last 5 or 6 sniper schools classes, it out shoots out-of the-box Remington PSS's, badly.

2. 12BVSS-S: 220 Swift, S/S 26" brl & action, laminated target stock, 6.5-25x44mm Millett scope. The Accu-Trigger was factory set at 1 lb 7oz. I have not tried any factory loads with this rifle, but my 2 handloads will group in the 3/8" average. The 53gr Seirra MHP and the 50gr V-Max both average just a touch better than 4,200 FPS and dump rounds into tiny little groups. This rifle is just plain fun and amazing to shoot.

3. 12BVSS: .308 Win, S/S 26" brl & action, laminated target stock, Nikon 5.5-16X44 Monarch scope. Facotry set Accu-Trigger is 1 lb 8oz. This rifle too averages groups in 3/4"-1/2" range with Federal 168gr GM. I haven't shoot this rifle but about 80 rounds so far, but I like it very much.

4. 10FM Seirra Ultra Light: .308 Win, 20" brl, 3 pd 4oz Accu-Trigger, Nikon 3.5-10x50 scope. I bought this rifle for my wife, who just start deer hunting this year. At 5'3" 120lb I wanted a short light weight rifle for her. This is a superb hunting rifle. Right out of the box, during barrel break in, it was putting 3 Federal 168gr GM, into clusters you could cover up with a nikle. The final handload, I settled on does not shoot that accurate, 1" to 1.25", but I went with a comfortable load for, instead of higher power loads, that while more accurate, did kick to hard for her.

5 & 6. 11FNS: .270 WSM, 24" brl, Accu-Trigger, don't know what poundage set at didn't weigh them, Nikon 4-12 Monarch scopes. With Winchester 140gr Fail safe, one did not like that bullet at all shooting 2.5" groups, while one loved them shooting just under MOA groups. The one rifl ethat didn't like the fail safes turned out to like the Win. 140gr ballistic silver tips, and started shooting sub-MOA groups with some constistency as well.
