Duece, from what you described you hit the deer int he ham, right? If so the deer has a very good chance of survival, the only thing that would stop it would be if you hit an artery, in which case it should have died quickly. I just find that there have been times when I thought I hit a deer marginally only to keep looking and find out it died close by.
