If you want a soft furry hide the best thing to do is send it off. It doesn't cost more than $45-75 depending on where you send it. That way you will know you have a good fur. For a stiff wall mount you can do it yourself. I peg it out, scrape, salt, scrape, soak in a strong solution of tea (tannic acid) and peg out again. This will dry real stiff, like a parchment. I have a hide I did over 10 years ago and it's still good. I'm sure there's others on here with more knowledge about it than me. Other sources of tannin are oak and deer brains. I think the deer brain method causes the hair to release though, if I remember right.
