Any mature elk is a trophy IMHO. What a great experience for you and your dad. Smart of you to "get it while you can" --- never mind time lost, go from here forward. Good of you to split the meat. That is what we do in our elk camp, everone who hunts gets an equal share of all the animals and all the cuts. We call it "tribal hunting" and it really helps foster a cohesive group IN TERMS OF people not getting sulky when they don't get an animal in a given year.

Can't wait to head out with the "war party" come next year! Only I'll be the Dad taking out my two sons, somewhere along the line, it will be them taking me out and then they can start taking on the brunt of the work --- yeah right. Great tradition/heritage building.
