Default RE: Shorten Rem 700 270 Barrel to 22" ????

ORIGINAL: nrladeere
I have a Remington 700 ADL in 270. It has a 24" barrel and shoots great. I would like a 22" barrel, primarily since I hunt from ground blinds. What would I give up in accuracy having it cut and recrowned? Anyone had this done? I love the gun and have customized the trigger etc so I want to keep it around.

24" ??? Are you sure? I've never known the Rem.700ADL to be made with anything other than 22" barrel in the standard ADL config. Not saying it ain't 24", but how are
you measuring it? From what point to end of muzzle?
Easiest way to get a good measurment on a barrel to have a tape measure with narrow
tape/rule. Close the bolt. Insert tape down barrel from muzzle. When it hits the face of the closed bolt, check the measurement at the muzzle.
In any case, shortening it by two inches should not be a problem if done by a competent gunsmith. The real hangup/potential problem is in the re-crowning of the barrel after it's been cut. Not a difficult procedure, but must be done right or accuracy will suffer.
Also, with shorter barrel you will lose some velocity. Approx. loss to be expected would be about 50-75fps. Not critical, but for a 270 I wouldn't want to go below 20".
