Default Repairing Coyote rug

I wasn't sure how to capture my question in the subject.

I have a coyote rug comprising of a coyote head with mouth open, fangs exposed, and the spread-eagled skin with fur attached. The skin is thin and cracking and falling apart. Tufts of fur fall off the coyote skin. There would appear to be no way to save this, but the head of the coyote appears to be OK. How would I separate the head of the coyote from the skin and mount it attractively? This was something that I inherited from my late father, and I have some sentimental value attached to it otherwise I would probably just pitch it all in the garbage. Or am I just fighting a losing battle and should just throw the old thing away?
