Default RE: Hunting WV

I live and hunt Hardy county and sometimes Hampshire. I havent hunted around Mathias much though, i mostly hunt around my hometown. If you are planning on hunting National Forest land, try to hunt the places that most of the other guys wont go. We have a good bit of out of staters hunt here, especially on the government. Ive found that most of them though wont walk too far from the roads or trails. Alot of times they will find the biggest piece of wide open woods and set side by side. So the best bet is to find the thickest, nastiest spot close to where all the other guys are piled up and hunt there. The deer are getting pushed by so many people that they try to find the heaviest cover they can. When i hunt national forest i usually walk as far back in as i can, usually thats where you start really seeing sign. Since you are with your grandfather you may not want to walk to far, but the key to the heavily hunted government lands is good cover. So wherever you can find heavy cover that would be a good place to go. I killed my biggest buck ever in a spot on the government that was so over grown that the farthest you could see was like 20 yards, i had one shooting lane about 5 feet wide. Luckily the buck was chasing a doe and she stopped there in the opening and so did he.

Hopefully i helped a little bit, good luck and have fun with your grandfather.
