I just remove the legs and let them dry for a couple of months until they get "Rock hard". Then I use a Bandsaw to cut very close on either side of the spur. Using a Q-tip, I then clean out any bone marrow, and I place them right into a spur display. I neve had a single problem with any spurs done that way.
