Try clapping or banging a couple of pieces of scrap wood together while your dog is eating. I usually start this as soon as I get a dog, so I'm not sure that it'll work with a 1 year old. But the theory is that it's associating the loud sounds with a pleasurable time. Obvioulsy the first time you do it your dog will probably freak out, but if you ease in to it and do it when the dog is focused on the food, it'll probably start to ignore you and just concentrate on the food.
